Everything I Do • Full time 911 dispatcher for Snyder County, PA • CPR and First Aid Instructor for American Heart • Adjunct instructor in Criminal Fusticefor SUN Area Technology Institute • Assistant Fire Chief for Freeburg, PA Fire Department • State Assistant Fire Warden for District 7 PA • EMT • Certified scuba diver and member of the Snyder/Northumberland Water Rescue Team • New husband 09/03/11 and new Dad 07/16/12!

  3. Why Public Safety? • Willingness to help people and be able to make a difference in people’s lives. • Grandpa Lou was already a life time member of numerous fire departments and a charter of Selinsgrove, PA Ambulance before I was even born. • Love the adrenaline rush of the unexpected!

Welcome to my World • I was born 3/13/80 in a major snow storm . • It was unfortunately not when I was supposed to be born, 05/20/80. • Medical protocols at the time called for incubation with O2 levels that left me with ROP or retina problems associated with being premature. • Today I am legally blind in my left eye and have vision problems in my right. • Are you scared when I tell you I can legally drive a fire truck? It’s true!

Snyder County takes a chance • Joined the D H and L Fire Company as a junior volunteer the day after I turned 14 (first day I could). • Joined the D H and L Ambulance the day I turned 16. • Started “hanging around” the dispatch center at 16. • Attended SUN Area Technical Institute as a Criminal Justice student 1998/1999. • Became an EMT in 1999. • Started with Snyder County Department of Emergency Services 07/05/99 and I have been there ever since!

Adaptations and Innovations • School adaptations were part of my life since kindergarten. • Blind services became involved in high school. • When I began work at Snyder County Department of Emergency Services I required very little adaptations because everything was manual. • It doesn’t hurt that I have an excellent memory for numbers.

  9. Adaptations and Innovations • 911 evolved and my world changed with the addition of computers. Things I use: • Hand held magnifier • Computer programs that enlarge text like zoom text • Computer mouse with magnifiers • My amazing memory

  10. Adaptations and Innovations • The Communication Center had to adapt to me doing things differently to accommodate my lack of sight. Examples: • Move the computer screens closer. • Use a magnifier to read any document. • It takes more time for me to read a document. • I don’t have to look up as many things as others because I have it memorized.

A Call to Action • Don’t assume an individual with an impairment can’t perform the task. • Be willing to accommodate. • Be willing to accept a different approach to accomplishing the same task. • Be willing to adapt the job to the person within reason. • Be willing to give someone a chance, they might surprise you!
