  1. How to Grow Programs and Revenue Through Distance Learning : The UNCG School of Health and Human Sciences, Office of Academic Outreach Celia Hooper, Dean School of Health and Human Sciences University of North Carolina Greensboro http://www.uncg.edu/hhs/

  2. Greetings from Greensboro and Minerva

  3. We want to be the best!

  4. Office of Academic Outreach http://www.uncg.edu/oao/ The Office of Academic Outreach (OAO) is an operating unit in the School of Health and Human Sciences (7 depts, 2 programs, several Centers, Clinics, etc.) Dr. Jim Eddy, Director

  5. Also on campus…. http://online.uncg.edu/online/index.php Online Learning, part of Continual Learning, for the whole university (not unit based like OAO) Somewhat confusing, but we work it out… our faculty use both. The model on campus is changing…more entrepreneurial…part of Strategic Plan

  6. Secret confession only to COHD and NERDS This confusion is a case study in…. Highlights the campus confusion in a central DL development and delivery mechanism and unit based system

  7. OAO/HHS/UNCG • OAO works with several departments and programs • Growth online programs including but not limited to: • Communication Sciences and Disorders • Gerontology • Kinesiology • Public Health Education • Community and Therapeutic Recreation • OAO provides consultative services to other universities • Georgia State: Certificate Program in Chronic Disease • University of Alabama: Update course for the Online Masters in Health Studies

  8. Faculty delivering HHS courses work with… • UNCG Teaching and Learning Center (Central, mostly workshops, some online information about DL) • OAO staff and grad students, for course development if unit based, best practices embedded • HHS Teaching and Technology support staff, http://www.uncg.edu/hhs/teaching-technology-support.html (They hold your hand.)

  9. OAO/PHE Collaboration • This presentation will showcase one collaborative example. OAO’s work with Public Health Education • OAO working with PHE, developed an online degree completion program targeted for community college graduates • The online courses in this mirrored on campus courses • Courses were used by on-campus students who needed online courses for various reasons

  10. OAO/PHE Outcomes 2010-2011 • 2694 student credit hours (SCH) from online degree completion program • 4371 SCH for on campus students completing online courses • $26,500 (est) in out of state tuition • See enrollment growth matrix

  11. Enrollment-Change Funding Model

  12. Factors That Influenced These Results • Five enabling assumptions • MOODLE course management system (free, easy) • Marketing, Recruitment, Retention, and Student Services • Best Practices

  13. Five Enabling Assumptions • Distance learning is not superior to or inferior to traditional face to face instruction • Successful distance learning programs are driven by teaching and learning rather than technology • Principle of marketing management apply to distance learning program success • Successful online/distance learning course and program meet the needs of multiple constituents • A culture of support at all levels and of the institution enable success

  14. Other Factors • MOODLE- open source, adaptable course management system • Marketing- needs of target marketing and communication channel examined to develop marketing plan • Recruitment- site visits to CCs, communication with transfer coordinators • Retention- see Best Practices • Student Services- see Best Practices

  15. Best Practices • Single point of contact • Open sources CMS- MOODLE • Same visual layout for each course • Pre-advising, pre-screening • Accept full and part-time students • Mirror on campus courses • Camtasia tutorials/ Course Intro’s • Instructor/Mentor Training

  16. They ARE UNCG students!

  17. Evaluation • Comprehensive course, instructor and technology evaluation • Website activity policy/evaluation • Registrar’s survey of online students • Exit interviews

  18. UNCG online learning undergoing change, campus wide Likely we will have unit based and central online course development and tech help The campus is changing to make online experience like F-to-F Cost of central versus unit an issue Reward structure for unit an issue (now more $ for out of state students) Provost is trying something new for next AY!

  19. Thanks, the end
