A New Chapter for Harper Library • June 12, 2009The William Rainey Harper Memorial Library closed. Collections are transferred to Regenstein Library. • September 29, 2009Harper reopens as the Harper Memorial Library Commons, a 24-hour study and group collaboration space managed by The College.
Overview of Changes at Harper • Main Harper Reading Room updated through new carpeting and furnishings • Bookshelves throughout will display student art and exhibits • Updated reading area with magazines and light reading • Soft seating and NSIT computers will enhance Stuart Reading Room • Circulation Desk area transformed into student-run café

College Librarians at the Commons A new service to help connect undergraduates with the wide variety of resources availablethrough the University of Chicago Library. Our Staff Jenny Hart, John Kimbrough, Nancy Spiegel, Rebecca Starkey, Sarah Wenzel, and Debra Werner Our Hours Monday – Friday 2-5pm (Excluding Interim)
Our Goals • To help serve College students south of the Midway • To make connections with other academic support services in the Commons • Writing Program • College Tutors • To build relationships with other College administrators • To help redefine the role of the librarian for College students from guides to books to guides to information.
Our Services • General reference at point of needOne-on-one research consultations, emphasizing personal, customized services • Mini-workshops highlighting Library resources • 60-90 training programs focusing on research skills and techniques • Outreach programs highlighting Library services • New Library web portal, integrated into the Commons website, designed for undergraduate researchers
Our Future • Like the Harper Memorial Library Commons, our new service is an experiment • Much of this year will involve data gathering • Reference statistics • Instruction statistics • Student and faculty feedback • Our services may change based on this assessment • Future renovations of the Harper Memorial Library Commons may also impact our space and services
