  2. Traditional Ways of Cooking • Roll the chapati dough and then flatten it out. Cook over open fire until done. • Outside over an open fire. • Fire inside of huts, usually with poor ventilation.

Existing Problems • Potential health risks • Indoor smoke inhalation • * Responsible for 1.5 million deaths per year globally, among women and small young children. • Deforestation • * Up to 500,000 acres are deforested in Tanzania each year. • Consumption of wood for fuel may contribute. • Waste of time • Much time is wasted traveling to collect the wood. • Waiting for wood to dry so it can be used in everyday cooking.

Recent Developments • Solar Cooker -The Global Resource Alliance has offered solar cooking workshops and over 1000 subsidized solar Cookits this past January • Landscape -WeForest is helping to restore the deforested area over the next 2 years by planting 130,000 trees • A study was done that found solar cooking viable for the needs of a rural family even during the lowest average solar radiation levels.

  5. Questions to Consider • Can we build it cheap and fast? • Can we store heat from it? • Things to consider: • Complexity of construction, sun inclination, and longevity • Limited availability of funds or materials for construction, durability, ease of use • Viable daylight hours • Reproducibility of the project
