  1. SUMMARY First-of-its-kind in North America. Award winning Sault Ste. Marie program. Improves safety during emergencies. Complements independent living. Emergency preparedness education.

  2. INSPIRATION In Memory of Lewis Wheelan 1981 - 2003

  3. ABOUT Free. Voluntary. Confidential. • A public service aimed at improving the safety of Sault Ste. Marie residents living at home who may be at greater risk in an emergency • Achieves improved safety by providing key information to local fire, police, paramedics and where authorized, Canadian Red Cross and PUC

  4. WHO IT CAN HELP Sault Ste. Marie residents within city limits who live at home without 24-hour care and have difficulty with any of the following: • Mobility, vision, hearing • Developmental/intellectual, cognitive or mental health Residents of Sault Ste. Marie, Prince Township, Dennis Township or Rankin Reserve who live at home and rely on electricity for life-sustaining equipment such as oxygen Exceptions may apply

  5. PLEASE NOTE: • Those receiving assistance from a long-term care facility or 24-hour on-site supportive housing facility are not eligible to register • Those under the age of 18 are not eligible to register except those with intensive needs (i.e. rely on electricity)

  6. WHO IT CAN HELP My wife and I are both deaf and would be unable to communicate through 9-1-1 and would be unable to hear police knocking on our door to notify us of an evacuation. My husband and I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building. He uses a wheelchair, so if there was a fire, I would be unable to help him out of the building quickly. I have little to no vision and may need assistance getting to a shelter if an evacuation is needed.

  7. HOW IT HELPS Power Outages Do you or someone you know rely on electricity for life-sustaining equipment like oxygen? Those relying on electricity are informed of planned power outages by PUC and are contacted by Canadian Red Cross during major power outages lasting 6 hours or more.

  8. HOW IT HELPS 9-1-1 Would you or someone you know be able to get out of the house quickly? Have a fear of authority? When 9-1-1 is called to a registrant’s address, key information is immediately available to local first responders through their dispatch system such as ‘obese’, ‘bedridden’, ‘oxygen’, ‘mental health’, ‘deaf’ etc. Being equipped with this key information ahead of time helps local first responders improve safety according to the individual’s needs.

  9. HOW IT HELPS Evacuations or Sheltering in place If disaster strikes, would you or someone you know need unique assistance? Emergency service groups will know the locations and key vulnerabilities of those who may need unique assistance which will help them plan a response accordingly.
