  2. In high schools across the country, over 60 percent of total discipline referrals are from 9th grade students. When students go to the 9th grade, five areas are often affected: • Their grades go down (this is even true with gifted students) • Their number of discipline referrals increases • The number of dropouts increases • Alcohol and marijuana use increases Studies suggest that there is a much greater chance of a student graduating from high school if they make it to the 10th grade. Transition programs, like 9th grade academies, are one piece of the puzzle in helping high schools change the way they do business. THE NEED

  3. It is the mission of the PEC Ninth Grade Academy is to assist incoming freshman in making a smooth transition into high school and in meeting the rigorous high school standards. THE MISSION

Structured system of appropriate extra help • Intensive math and literacy instruction delivered to students who are below 9th grade level • Advisor/Advisee program (Teachers as Educational Advisors and Mentors) • Frequent contact between school and parents • Ongoing recognition of accomplishments   ACADEMY FEATURES

  8. Increased academic achievement • Reduction in the number of tardies – (Tardiness is the number one discipline issue in high schools today. Having the students in one location with their lockers right there, will drastically reduce tardies). • The students will be in a building that only houses other first time 9th graders. As a result, they will not have the influence of older students. • Reduced discrepancies in the achievement gap • Increased student attendance, attitudes and behavior • Reduction in isolation that often seeds alienation and violence BENEFITS
