  1. Permanent Weight Loss Dr WAYNE GARD CHIROPRACTOR ♦ ACUPUNCTURIST ♦ NATUROPATH 1 Secant St Liverpool (Near Westfields) 96009593 email gardchiropractic@people.net.au Website www.gardchiropracticclinic.com.au

  2. Who Am I and Why Should You Listen To Me? • Wayne Gard is a qualified Chiropractor, Naturopath, and Acupuncturist • He has been serving Liverpool residents for 23 years. • Served as a Sports Chiropractor at the 2009 World Masters Games. • Examiner and Tutor at Macquarie University • He is a keen amateur athlete, enjoys swimming, running and bike riding.

  3. This seminar is a brief look at Natural Treatments for weight loss. • For those who want more detail a full copy of this presentation is available on my website. • This website also contains an offer to a great book called ‘The 7 Things Your Doctor Forgot To Tell You’ • www.gardchiropracticclinic.com.au

  4. What is Going On??? • Australia, new Zealand and the United States are now officially the fattest nations in the world • A staggering 60% of Australians are overweight or obese • Skyrocketing since the 1980’s • In 2010 obesity took over smoking as the major contributor to ill health - including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoarthritis and dementia • WHY??? • We are living in an OBESIGENIC ENVIRONMENT = a lifestyle that creates obesity!!! • 24 hour supermarkets providing affordable, never ending supply of calories • Portion sizes sold that are twice the recommended meal serving size • Our primitive appetite regulation centres are bombarded by highly palatable foods, and these centres act to increase our intake in preparation of leaner times, which never arrive • Time is scarce – many people find it hard to find the time (or are too tired) to cook healthy meals and exercise • Modern conveniences/gadgets that reduce our physical exertion

  5. What is Fat? • How Does Your Body Store Fat? • After puberty the number of fat cells remains the same - Each fat cell simply gets bigger! • Fat is stored in 3 places 1. Subcutaneous = under your skin 2. Organs = around your internal organs – liver, kidneys 3. Muscles = large muscles (eg football players) can simply be too much fat in their muscles….as opposed to a ‘lean’ runner = little muscle fat • These 3 fat areas are related to each other – so if you have fat in one area you tend to have fat elsewhere!….therefore any treatment needs to target all 3 areas. • BUT it is the Organ Fat that is the major health risk factor! • Organ Fat can occur in ‘skinny’ people !!! eg high Cholesterol - we have all heard of the skinny person who suddenly dies of a heart attack, and the fat person who never seems to have heart problems • Some people say “I have large bones OR I am a naturally large person OR my weight is due to bad genes”….however these are just excuses! • Where fat is concentrated in your body depends upon whether you are a man or woman: • An adult man tends to carry body fat in his chest, abdomen and buttocks, producing an "apple" shape. • An adult woman tends to carry fat in her breasts, hips, waist and buttocks, creating a "pear" shape.

  6. What Does Fat Do? • Traditional View = fat is an inert stored energy source – it has no other purpose or function • Current view = fat cells secrete a wealth of chemicals and hormones that alter your metabolism… • These hormones are significant drivers of chronic (long term) diseases (eg heart disease, diabetes, and cancer) and inflammation • Inflammation causes PAIN and FATIGUE……so overweight people commonly have more aches and pains, and more easily become tired and fatigued!!! • Common organs that become damaged/diseased in overweight people include the heart, liver, and pancreas

  7. Why Do Compliant Patients Fail? • How come that getting weight off AND keeping it off is so difficult??? • If we assume that Poor Diet and Lack of Exercise are the most common reasons that people become overweight…then how come even people who eat well and exercise regularly are getting fatter and can’t seem to lose their weight??? • Australians spend billions of dollars every year on weight loss products and ideas, yet we are getting fatter with each passing year!!! • How many people here tonight are taking a weight loss supplement? Or some other natural medicine? Show of hands… • What is the missing link??? • While diet and exercise are undoubtedly the path back to a healthy weight…many people PLATEAU after some initial results…. • keeping people moving on the weight loss path requires skilful assessment and treatment of OTHER HEALTH factors! • In this talk I will discuss Natural Treatment Strategies to target some of these key factors that confound weight loss attempts.

  8. Being Overweight is a Disease • Just like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer • What is the disease = Slow Metabolism • We all know the skinny person who eats whatever they want and never put on any weight….and the overweight person who just has to look at food to put weight on  • What is going on? • Well just like any disease, it just doesn’t happen! It develops over time • = The SLIDING HEALTH SCALE

  9. 1. Health is a Sliding Scale • Strength • Flexibility • Fitness • Positive Mental Attitude • Posture • Immunity • Digestion • Sleep • Pain Free • Good Skin and Hair • Fertility • Energetic • Ease of breathing • NORMAL METABOLISM • All tests normal • Loss of Strength • Loss of Flexibility • Loss of Fitness • Negative Mental Attitude • Poor Posture • Lowered Immunity • Decreased Digestion • Sleep Problems • Frequent pain • Skin & hair problems • Fertility problems • Fatigue • Poor breathing • SLOWING METABOLISM • Chiropractic/Naturopathic tests positive. • Medical tests normal • Arthritis • Bulging Spinal Discs • Pinched Nerves • Depression & Anxiety • Cancer, Colds & Flu’s • Reflux. Ulcers, constipation • Insomnia • Pain • Heart Disease • Eczema, Psoriasis • Infertility • Asthma • SLOW METABOLISM • Chiropractic/Naturopathic/ Medical tests all positive

  10. First Step = Decide where you are on this scale • If you are not in Optimal Health make a decision to do something about it! TODAY! • Recognise that being Overweight is a disease process that has taken time to develop • Therefore be patient with your body to get results • 1 to 2 years is a realistic time frame

  11. FASTER METABOLISM = THE GOAL

  12. HAVE YOU GOT THE GUTS TO LOSE WEIGHT?

  13. A Healthy Gut and Weight Control? • A key concept in Natural Medicine is that we need to have a healthy functioning Digestive System or Gut in order to have Good Health, Including Good Weight Control • Our Gut had 3 main Roles 1: Absorb nutrients from our diet – food and drink 2: Remove Toxins from our body – bowel and kidneys 3: Eliminate excess Fat • The following Disorders all cause the gut to not work properly

  14. YOUR SPINE AND YOUR GUT

  15. Your Spine Controls Your Body

  16. 5 Disorders and Treatment Strategies • Fatty Liver • Thyroid Gland – Type 2 • Acid/Alkaline Balance • Adrenal Fatigue – Stress • Insulin Resistance Syndrome

  17. FATTY LIVER • A condition where large vacuoles of triglyceride fat accumulate in liver…think marbled steak! • Fatty liver disease is the most common liver complaint in Western countries. • It affects about 15-20% of people. • It is THE MOST COMMON Metabolic Disorder in man!!! • It is caused by a build-up of fats in the liver, which replace healthy tissue and trigger enlargement of the rest of the liver cells. • The healthy liver regulates fat metabolism and is the major fat-burning organ in the body.  Indeed the healthy liver not only burns fat, it can pump excessive fat out of your body through the bile into the gut. Thus, if your liver is healthy you will not have much difficulty in controlling your weight.

  18. Normal Liver: A healthy liver is much redder in colour and has a uniform texture Fatty Liver : on leftNote it is slightly enlarged and yellow in colour and "shiny" or "greasy" in appearance because it is congested with fat. Severe Fatty Liver:This is a more severe degree of fatty liver and is more often due to incorrect diet, alcohol excess or obesity.

  19. How do you know if you have a fatty liver? • You will probably be overweight, especially in the abdominal area • You will find it very hard to lose weight • You may have elevated cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood • You may have Syndrome X – Metabolic Syndrome • You may have diabetes type 2 • You will be very tired • You may have problems with your immune system Diet Guidelines: • Reduce the consumption of refined carbohydrates from sugar and bread, pastry, pasta, noodles, cakes, biscuits and desserts. • Increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables • Use raw vegetable juices • Avoid deep fried, fatty, and processed foods • Aim to limit dairy foods including milk, processed cheese, cream and butter.  Opt for organic yogurt and cheese such as ricotta, parmesan or cottage. Try some different brands and varieties of soy as they vary greatly. The fresh soy products in the dairy cabinet are much lighter and not as strong in taste as the long life products. There are also rice milks and oat milks to try. • Avoid ALL margarines and similar type spreads.   • Avoid sugary processed foods and drinks • Limit chicken and turkey that is not free range as this contains artificial growth hormones, antibiotics and steroids that increase the liver's workload. • Drink 2 liters of water each day. • Avoid artificial sweeteners

  20. Fatty Liver Treatment • 2 Treatment Concepts – Internal = Nutrients…..External = Nerve Signals from Brain/Spine • Increase Fibre – Psyllium Husks • Nutrient – Lecithin • Cocoa Powder! – yes the natural ingredient in chocolate  • Phytosterols – the stuff that is now being put into margarines, milk etc • Globe Artichoke – herbal medicine • Sugar Can Wax alcohols • Spinal Nerve Supply – Neck C1-2 and Mid Back T4 - 12 Product = CHOLESTAHEALTH

  21. THYROID – TYPE 2 • there is a complex relationship between thyroid disease, body weight and metabolism. • Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism in both animals and humans • an underactive thyroid (HYPOTHYROIDISM) is generally associated with weight gain • Lack of thyroid hormones leads to an increase in fat, salt, and water in your body • There are 2 types of Hypothyroidism • Type 1 Hypothyroidism is where there is a lack of the hormone produced. This is easily detected in a blood test, and commonly treated with drugs – though there are some natural alternatives! • Type 2 Hypothyroidism is where there is enough hormone produced but this hormone is unable to get into your cells, and therefore it is rendered ineffective. This is NOT detected in blood tests! But by other clinical tests – such as Basal Temperature Testing. • Type 2 is thought to be due to be due to genetic thyroid imbalances, autoimmune dysfunction, and environmental toxins • Interestingly thyroid disease is commonly associated with chronic PAIN SYNDROMES, and therefore must be treated in order to help with pain levels. • Also – it is commonly associated with poor Sleeping patterns. So if you are a poor sleeper then it is worthwhile having this checked.

  22. Thyroid Imbalance Treatment • STRESS - A large body of scientific evidence suggests that the impact of stress can affect the body on multiple levels and that there is indeed a ‘STRESS SYSTEM’ that responds and deals with stresses in our lives • What is STRESS - it is comprised of Neurological (Spinal Misalignments), Endocrine (Hormone) imbalance, Psychological (Emotions) and Environmental (Toxins) components. • Spinal Nerve Supply – Neck – Vagus nerve = C1, C2 - Upper Back = T1 – T4 • Herbs – Rehmannia, Coleus, Bladderwrack, Broccoli Sprouts, Turmeric • Nutrients – Tyrosine, Selenium, Iodine, Zinc, B Vitamins, Vit C, Vit E Product = P2 Detox

  23. ACID / ALKALINE BALANCE • In patients who are eating well and exercising but still not losing enough weight. An important consideration is acid/alkaline balance in you body • As a general rule we want our bodies to be slightly alkaline…. to have a proper functioning digestive system or gut • Much of the Western diet consists of refined carbohydrates (sugars) that creates a low grade metabolic acidosis. • As a general rule - Meat, Dairy, and Animal Proteins = acid forming - Fruit and vegetable = alkaline forming • HOWEVER a dilemma exists that helps explain why we stop losing weight – losing weight creates a breakdown of fat that creates body acidity!!! So this is one of the reasons why weight loss stops or plateaus, just when your weight starts to reduce. • So your body starts to look at ways to alkalise itself – and one way of doing this is to breakdown protein in muscles to excrete thru your urine!!! Which then creates LESS muscle mass, which leads to our metabolisms slowing, leading to weight gain  • It is crucial then that throughout weight loss that sufficient alkalising foods and supplements are consumed

  24. Acid/Alkaline Imbalance Treatment • Magnesium • Potassium Citrate • Cherry Extract • Celery Extract Product = ALKA CAP

  25. ADRENAL FATIGUE = STRESS • Stress comes in many forms – over work, relational difficulties, poor diet, financial, lack of sleep, pain, health problems, environmental toxins etc • These Stressors deplete our energy reserves, and so we dig deeper and deeper into ourselves… we push even harder which creates even more fatigue!!! It’s a vicious cycle…. • Long term stress has been shown to increase appetite – especially craving high fat, high carbohydrate, high salt foods • Chronic stress raises the hormone Cortisol – which breaks down muscle mass…leading to slower metabolism and weight gain… • Cortisol – also suppresses Serotonin production, leading to depression, and then we choose simple carbohydrates and Binge or Comfort eating to temporarily boost your mood ! • The organ that tries to regulate or cope with our stressors is the Adrenal Gland – sits just above our kidneys • Eventually the Adrenal Gland becomes exhausted or run down and we enter a state of Hypoadrenia. Which is a long term underactive performing adrenal gland. • Apart from stress response, the adrenals also control blood pressure, sugar levels, growth (therefore critical in children), and sexual function. • Hypoadrenia often leads to weight gain and conditions such as - chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, allergies, pain and inflammation, anxiety and depression, blood pressure – high or low, stomach ulcers, menopausal syndrome in women, and prostate problems in men

  26. How is Adrenal Fatigue Treated? • NUTRIENTS • Magnesium • Taurine • Glutamine • HERBS • Licorice • Tribulus • Reduce Stress on your body – similar to the Thyroid Gland, too many stressors on your body lead to adrenal dysfunction and disease • Spinal Nerves – Neck C1-2 and Mid Back T4 - 12

  27. Insulin Resistance Syndrome

  28. Insulin resistance • Insulin is the hormone that regulates sugar metabolism in our bodies. Most of us are aware of insulin deficiency leading to Diabetes (an ever increasing disease!) • Insulin resistance means that your body does not use the hormone insulin as effectively as it should, especially in the muscles and liver. • Normally your digestive system breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which then passes from your intestine into your bloodstream. As your blood glucose level rises, your pancreas secretes insulin into your bloodstream. Insulin allows glucose to move into your muscle cells from your blood. Once inside a cell, the glucose is ‘burned’ – along with oxygen – to produce energy. • When a person has insulin resistance, the pancreas needs to release more insulin than usual to maintain normal blood glucose levels. This fatigues the pancreas and can lead to diabetes. • It is thought that more than a quarter of the population (25%) has some degree of resistance to insulin. • NOTE - it is possible to have NORMAL Blood Sugar results, but still have Insulin Resistance! • Also linked to High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Sleep Apnoea, Respiratory Problems

  29. How is Insulin Resistance Syndrome Treated? • Herbs - D-Purslane, Gymnema, • Nutrients – chromium, zinc, magnesium, selenium,manganese and B vitamins • Spinal Nerve Supply – Neck – C1-2 - Mid back – T4 – 12 Product = Gluco Control

  30. So What is the Next Step? • Option 1 • Keep doing what you are doing now • Definition of insanity = doing the same thing but expecting a different result  • The Risk here is that you will get poor results…overweight plus all the associated health problems!!! • Option 2 • Do something different  • Your body needs to be stimulated into a faster metabolism – HOW???

  31. Do Something Different??? • Over many years I have seen good results with: • 1. Get your spine checked by a Chiropractor – to stimulate the nerve flow from your brain and therefore speed up your metabolism. • 2. Get your organs checked by a Naturopath – to find out which nutrients you need to take to heal your organs and so speed up your metabolism • 3. Get Fit !!! Build Lean Muscle 
