Processor and Main Memory Processor Main Memory Processor - Deals with all the movement of data and the calculations that need to be carried out. Main Memory-Used to store programs and data
A5 processor (IPAD) Intel Core i7 Clock speeds are a measure of how powerful a processor is. 1 Megahertz (1 MHz) = 1 million pulses per second 1 Gigahertz (1 GHz) = 1000 million pulses per second Clock speed 800MHz 3.2 GHz
The Main Memory • The main memory can be either RAM or ROM. • Random Access Memory is the working space of the computer. • It holds all the programs and data you are currently using. • When you are using MS Word it has been loaded from your computer’s hard disk into RAM. • The unsaved work you have typed so far is also held in RAM.
Read Only Memory • Read Only Memory is used by the computer to store data permanently. • In computer systems ROM is used to store the Operating System of your computer. • Stores the programs that run MP3 players, Washing machines, Central Heating system and other devices in your home • It is very difficult to change the data held in ROM
