  1. Aim: What are antibodies and antigens? Do now: How are viruses and bacteria different in structure? How are they different in how they infect an organism?

  2. Scale of viruses/parasites/cells • http://scaleofuniverse.com/

  3. T-cells • T-cells are special type of white blood cell (or lymphocyte) • You have millions of T-cells and each one produces a unique protein called an ANTIBODY

  4. Pathogens have foreign proteinscalled antigens Antibodies are constantly looking for the antigen that fits just right Most Antibodies don’t find an Antigen but……

  5. When the Antibody finds its antigen match, it has locked onto a target This pathogen is now targeted for destruction

  6. Other types of white blood cells begin to consume the pathogen

  7. B-cells • B-Cells keep memory of any pathogens/antigens it has destroyed • If you are ever infected with virus again, B-cells quickly release the antibodies BEFORE you become sick

  8. Exit Question • What is an antibody and what does it look for? What happens if it finds it? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90hSVkaOG_w
