Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work or ideas without proper attribution. It includes copying answers, cutting and pasting from websites, or using pre-written responses during assignments. Such actions violate academic integrity, showing disrespect to original creators and undermining your own learning. Consequences can include suspension, failing grades, and damage to your reputation. To avoid plagiarism in your projects, never use external sources without citation and ensure your work reflects your own understanding. Uphold the Honor Code for a fair academic environment.

I. What is plagiarism or cheating? • copying anyone’s answers to homework, quizzes, tests, or projects
cutting/pasting or re-typing any website and turning it in as your work
using any source (internet, book, or other) without citing it—even if you paraphrase parts of it!
having pre-written answers written beforehand and using them on a quiz, test, etc.
texting answers—or questions—during a quiz, test, or other assignment
using any electronic device (cell phone, iPod, etc.) to help you answer questions during a quiz or test
anything where you don’t do your own work but call it yours!
II. Why is plagiarism bad? • it doesn’t give credit to the person whose work you stole • it violates the HONOR CODE and will get you suspended • it violates the trust your teachers have in you • you are not learning the material yourself • you are not being a good citizen
III. Why your teacher doesn’t like to catch you… • it hurts her feelings; she is disappointed in you • it insults her intelligence; she KNOWS what you write like • it means she has to give you a 0 and you get suspended • it means she has to call your parents, and they get upset/disappointed in you, too • it means you will get in serious trouble with the administration • “academic misconduct” goes on your transcript that you’ll send for college one day • you won’t be able to get into NHS with an Honor Code violation on your record • she really doesn’t want your grades to go down
IV. Why your teacher will still turn you in… (but will be very sad) • you broke their rules and MTHS’s rules, and that isn’t right. • you should not get credit for work you did not do! • it is unfair to students who DID all of their own work • hopefully you will learn from your mistakes! • because MTHS policy says so • because it is morally wrong
V. How to Avoid Plagiarism for your summer reading project • DON’T use a website to “help you” while you write your paper. • DON’T write your paper with a friend. You might end up with some too-similar phrases. • DO turn your paper in to turnitin.com early and check over the report! • DO have a parent read over your project!
