Reasons for good practice in infection control procedures on a surgical ward Prevent spread of infection from one patient to another or from nurse to patient when in hospital ( hospital acquired infection ) Meet the Department of Health requirements for reducing hospital acquired infection ( DoH 2007 ) Save patients lives and reduce additional suffering and unnecessary pain and anxiety

Importance of Hand-washing in infection control Key to prevention and control of infection Choices of hand-decontamination : soap and water , alcohol based hand rubs or gel or antimicrobial hand wash Six- step hand wash technique ( Endacott et al 2009) Use of personal protective equipment: gloves , disposable aprons and eye and mouth protection Student nurses : importance of learning in clinical skills sessions
