Overview of Project • Faculty development workshop • Innovative Course-Building Group (ICBG) • Centered around course development/re-development • Outgrowth of participation in SENCER • Science Education for New Civic Engagements & Responsibilities • Supported by • National Science Foundation SENCER sub-award • GCSU faculty grant • Georgia STEM mini grant

Goals of the Project • Increase number of courses on campus that teach through STEM-related civic issues • Increase number of students in STEM majors • Increase success of non-STEM majors in Introductory STEM courses • Continue to build community locally, regionally, & nationally • Common purpose of engaging students in STEM fields through civic issues

  4. STEM Mini-grant Support • Will fund travel to SENCER Summer Institute 2010 for several ICBG members • At SSI 2010 • ICBG members will present courses they have developed and/or implemented at GCSU • ICBG members will have opportunities to network (continue collaboration) with other institutions and faculty engaged in similar work

  5. SSI 2010 Presentation Possibilities • Courses aimed at STEM majors: • Caralyn Lab-designing workshop for biology graduate students.  Workshop participants will design new SENCER-ized labs for Introduction to Environmental Science (ENSC 1000). • Caralyn & Kim (developed, to be implemented)

  6. SSI 2010 Presentation Possibilities • Courses aimed at increasing student success (not necessarily STEM majors) in intro STEM courses • Julia & Sandra (developed, to be implemented this year: Maymester food course will address local food problems such as healthy soup kitchen food, waste on campus, etc.) • Julia & Amy (developed, implemented for 3rd time Fall 2010: cluster course will be centered around climate change ) - IDST 2405 Necessities of Life and MATH 1101 Math Modeling • George(developed, to be implemented: Math Modeling through financial calculations.)

  7. SSI 2010 Presentation • Our application to SSI 2010 is complete • We have identified a team who will attend

  8. Assessment Directions • Track number of ICBG/SENCER influenced courses being taught on campus • Track number of students enrolled in these courses –and track their progression through the core • Are they more successful in intro STEM courses than other students? • How many STEM majors are retained? • Is there any migration to STEM majors from non-STEM majors?
