  1. Indiana Local Resolution Project March 29, 2012 NHD Stewardship Conference Mike Martin, IN Department of Natural Resources Chair, Indiana Geographic Information Council Waters Workgroup

  2. NHD Stewardship for Indiana • State Geographic Information Officer • Indiana Geographic Information Council • State Agencies • Sub-stewards to-be-named later

  3. Indiana Geographic Information Council • A nonprofit organization whose mission is coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, building partnerships and the IndianaMap. • Important role is to develop plans, standards, and technical implementation guidance for the IndianaMap framework data layers...including surface waters.

  4. Indiana Geographic Information Council IGIC’s - Waters Framework Dataset Workgroup • Open to all, made up mostly by representatives from state agencies (natural resources, environmental management, and transportation), USGS, and NRCS. • Established the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) for Indiana as the statewide framework dataset for surface waters. • Provide stewardship assistance to State GIO

  5. Improving Indiana’s NHD Goal: Correct & upgrade NHD to local resolution • Address many issues found with High Resolution • existence of physical features • naming of features • alignment to higher resolution orthoimagery • many users need better resolution hydrography • Before creating Local Res, fixed GNIS Names in 24K

  6. Improving Indiana’s NHD Creating local resolution NHD Contract between AECOM and Indiana Office of Technology Phase 1, 30 Subbasins • Funded by Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Disaster Recovery Funds • Goal for completion of Phase 1 is Dec 2013 Phase 2....yet to be funded

  7. Creating Local Resolution NHD • Source data • Imagery: 2005 / 2011 one foot and/or half foot pixel RGB orthophotography, supplemented by available local data when newer and/or more accurate. • Terrain: 2005 (ISTAR) / 2011 (LIDAR) 5 ft cell size DEMs, supplemented by available local data when newer and/or more accurate. ISTAR LIDAR

  8. Creating Local Resolution NHD • Additional Reference data • 1:24K NHD • National Wetlands Inventory • Stormwater data (where available) • Local hydrography (where available) • 6 acre guide streams • 6 acre basins • INDNR dams • Karst dyelines

  9. Creating Local Resolution NHD • Digitize flowlines up to 6-acre drainage area upstream limit, aligning to 1’ or better ortho • Digitize waterbodies draining ¼ acre or greater, aligning to 1’ or better ortho • Add all 24K NHD area, lines and points • Reach codes, ComIDs, perm IDs, GNIS info conflated from 1:24K NHD • Feature level, FGDC compliant metadata generated for each sub-basin

  10. Creating Local Resolution NHD • Phase 1 Pilot, Upper Eel Subbasin • 24K NHD: 2,177 Flowlines; 2,571 Waterbodies • Local Resolution: 47,821 Flowlines; 3,350 Waterbodies

  11. Post-Upgrade Maintenance After the Upgrade, the Real Work Begins • Critical to providing a statewide dataset that can be beneficial to users across the state at all levels • Identify individuals and organizations that can help as sub-stewards for their areas of interest • Provide tools for sub-stewards to easily submit corrections • Names of features...may require new names in GNIS • Classifications, e.g. perennial, intermittent, ditch, etc. • Presence or locations of features
