  1. Objective:- I will distinguish between permutations & combinations and solve both types of problems. -Given four problems involving permutations, combinations, or the Fundamental Counting principle, I will identify which is involved and solve correctly.

  2. Combinations & Permutations Combination: A selection in which order is not important (no repeats) Permutations: A way to arrange things in which order is important (no repeats)

  3. Ex 1. You want to pick a student council president and vice-president. You have 5 people that could fill any of the above positions. How many possibilities are there? 20 Is this a combination or a permutation?

  4. Ex 2. Two students from your homeroom are selected to be representatives. If there are 5 students who want to be reps in your homeroom, how many possible selections are there? 10 Is this a combination or a permutation?

  5. Ex 3. A moped license plate has two letters and then four numbers in it. How many plates can be made? 26(letters) * 26(letters) * 10(digits) * 10(digits) * 10(digits) * 10(digits) = 6,760,000

  6. Ex 4. A moped license plate has two letters and then four numbers in it. How many plates can be made without duplicating numbers or letters? • 26 x 25 x 10 x 9 x8 x 7 = 3,276,000
