  3. Joel • “This is the LORD's message to Joel…Pay attention, you older people; everyone in Judah, listen. Has anything like this ever happened in your time or the time of your ancestors? Tell your children about it; they will tell their children, who in turn will tell the next generation. Swarm after swarm of locusts settled on the crops; what one swarm left, the next swarm devoured. Wake up and weep, you drunkards; cry, you wine-drinkers; the grapes for making new wine have been destroyed. An army of locusts has attacked our land; they are powerful and too many to count; their teeth are as sharp as those of a lion. They have destroyed our grapevines and chewed up our fig trees. They have stripped off the bark, till the branches are white. Cry, you people, like a young woman who mourns the death of the man she was going to marry. There is no grain or wine to offer in the Temple; the priests mourn because they have no offerings for the LORD. The fields are bare; the ground mourns because the grain is destroyed, the grapes are dried up, and the olive trees are withered.” (“the olive oil is gone” – GOD’S WORD)

  4. “Grieve, you farmers; cry, you that take care of the vineyards, because the wheat, the barley, yes all the crops are destroyed. The grapevines and fig trees have withered; all the fruit trees have wilted and died. The joy of the people is gone. Put on sackcloth and weep, you priests who serve at the altar! Go into the Temple and mourn all night! There is no grain or wine to offer your God. Give orders for a fast; call an assembly! Gather the leaders and all the people of Judah into the Temple of the LORD your God and cry out to him! The day of the LORD is near, the day when the Almighty brings destruction. What terror that day will bring!” (Joel 1:1-15 – GN)

  5. “Blow the trumpet; sound the alarm on Zion, God's sacred hill. Tremble, people of Judah! The day of the LORD is coming soon. It will be a dark and gloomy day, a black and cloudy day. The great army of locusts advances like darkness spreading over the mountains. There has never been anything like it, and there never will be again. Like fire they eat up the plants. In front of them the land is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them it is a barren desert. Nothing escapes them. They look like horses; they run like war-horses. As they leap on the tops of the mountains, they rattle like chariots; they crackle like dry grass on fire. They are lined up like a great army ready for battle. As they approach, everyone is terrified; every face turns pale. They attack like warriors; they climb the walls like soldiers. They all keep marching straight ahead and do not change direction or get in each other's way. They swarm through defenses, and nothing can stop them. They rush against the city; they run over the walls; they climb up the houses and go in through the windows like thieves. The earth shakes as they advance; the sky trembles. The sun and the moon grow dark, and the stars no longer shine.” (Joel 2:1-10 – GN)

  6. “Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet. I saw a star which had fallen down to the earth, and it was given the key to the abyss. The star opened the abyss, and smoke poured out of it, like the smoke from a large furnace; the sunlight and the air were darkened by the smoke from the abyss. Locusts came down out of the smoke upon the earth, and they were given the same kind of power that scorpions have. They were told not to harm the grass or the trees or any other plant; they could harm only the people who did not have the mark of God's seal on their foreheads. The locusts were not allowed to kill these people, but only to torture them for five months. The pain caused by the torture is like the pain caused by a scorpion's sting. During those five months they will seek death, but will not find it; they will want to die, but death will flee from them. The locusts looked like horses ready for battle; on their heads they had what seemed to be crowns of gold, and their faces were like human faces. Their hair was like women's hair, their teeth were like lions' teeth. Their chests were covered with what looked like iron breastplates, and the sound made by their wings was like the noise of many horse-drawn chariots rushing into battle. They have tails and stings like those of a scorpion, and it is with their tails that they have the power to hurt people for five months. They have a king ruling over them, who is the angel in charge of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon; in Greek the name is Apollyon (meaning "The Destroyer").” (Revelation 9:1-11 – GN)

  7. “Therefore, in a single day, the Lord will destroy both the head and the tail, the palm branch and the reed. The leaders of Israel are the head, and the lying prophets are the tail. For the leaders of the people have led them down the path of destruction.” (Isaiah 9:14-16 – NLT)

  8. “The LORD thunders commands to his army. The troops that obey him are many and mighty. How terrible is the day of the LORD! Who will survive it? ‘But even now,’ says the LORD, ‘repent sincerely and return to me with fasting and weeping and mourning. Let your broken heart show your sorrow; tearing your clothes is not enough.’ Come back to the LORD your God. He is kind and full of mercy; he is patient and keeps his promise; he is always ready to forgive and not punish.” (Joel 2:11-14 – GN)

  9. “The LORD said, ‘Assyria! I use Assyria like a club to punish those with whom I am angry.’” (Isaiah 10:5 – GN) • “The LORD says, ‘Babylonia, you are my hammer, my weapon of war. I used you to crush nations and kingdoms.’” (Jeremiah 51:20 – GN)

  10. “I will remove the locust army that came from the north and will drive some of them into the desert. Their front ranks will be driven into the Dead Sea, their rear ranks into the Mediterranean. Their dead bodies will stink. I will destroy them because of all they have done to you.” (Joel 2:20 – GN)

  11. “Afterward I will pour out my Spirit on everyone: your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your old people will have dreams, and your young people will see visions. At that time I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, both men and women.” (Joel 2:28-29 – GN)

  12. “I will give warnings of that day in the sky and on the earth; there will be bloodshed, fire, and clouds of smoke. The sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes.” (Joel 2:30-31 – GN)

  13. “I will gather all the nations and bring them to the Valley of Judgment. There I will judge them for all they have done to my people. They have scattered the Israelites in foreign countries and divided Israel, my land.” (Joel 3:2 – GN) • “Thousands and thousands are in the Valley of Judgment. It is there that the day of the LORD will soon come.” (Joel 3:14 – GN)

  14. “The great day of the Lord is near—very near and coming fast! That day will be bitter, for even the bravest soldiers will cry out in despair! It will be a day of fury, a day of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and destruction, a day of darkness and gloom, a black and cloudy day, a day filled with the sound of war trumpets and the battle cry of soldiers attacking fortified cities and high towers. The Lord says, ‘I will bring such disasters on the human race that everyone will grope about like someone blind. They have sinned against me, and now their blood will be poured out like water, and their dead bodies will lie rotting on the ground.’ On the day when the Lord shows his fury, not even all their silver and gold will save them. The whole earth will be destroyed by the fire of his anger. He will put an end—a sudden end—to everyone who lives on earth.” (Zephaniah 1:14-18 – GN)

  15. “Shameless nation, come to your senses before you are driven away like chaff blown by the wind, before the burning anger of the LORD comes upon you, before the day when he shows his fury. Turn to the LORD, all you humble people of the land, who obey his commands. Do what is right, and humble yourselves before the LORD. Perhaps you will escape punishment on the day when the LORD shows his anger. (Zephaniah 2:1-3 – GN)

  16. “Just wait,’ the LORD says. ‘Wait for the day when I rise to accuse the nations. I have made up my mind to gather nations and kingdoms in order to let them feel the force of my anger. The whole earth will be destroyed by the fire of my fury.’” (Zephaniah 3:8 – GN)

  17. God’s anger

  18. God’s anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them, for God himself made it plain” (Romans 1:18,19 – GN). • “They say they are wise, but they are fools; instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortals or birds or animals or reptiles. And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen. Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions….Because those people refuse to keep in mind the true knowledge about God, he has given them over to corrupted minds, so that they do the things that they should not do” (Romans 1:22-26,28 – GN).

  19. “Some people keep on doing good, and seek glory, honor, and immortal life; to them God will give eternal life. Other people are selfish and reject what is right, in order to follow what is wrong; on them God will pour out his anger and fury” (Romans 2:7,8 – GN). • “And all who believe in God’s Son have eternal life. Those who don’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life, but the wrath of God remains upon them” (John 3:36 – NRSV). • “For their sake I could wish that I myself were under God’s curse and separated from Christ.” (Romans 9:3 – GN)

  20. “He will do this when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven with his mighty angels, with a flaming fire, to punish those who reject God and who do not obey the Good News about our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious might.” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

  21. “You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.” (Genesis 2:17 – GN) • “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Matthew 27:46, GOD’S WORD).

  22. FIRE

  23. “When John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them, ‘You snakes---who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send? Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. And don't think you can escape punishment by saying that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham! The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire. I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire…He will gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.’” (Matthew 3:7-12 – GN)

  24. “It began as the prophet Isaiah had written: ‘God said, 'I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.' Someone is shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!' So John appeared…” (Mark 1:2-4 – GN)

  25. “The LORD Almighty answers, ‘I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger you long to see will come and proclaim my covenant.’ But who will be able to endure the day when he comes? Who will be able to survive when he appears? He will be like strong soap, like a fire that refines metal. He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the LORD’s messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the LORD the right kind of offerings.” (Malachi 3:1-3 – GN)

  26. “I came to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already kindled!” (Luke 12:49 – GN)

  27. “For this reason the Lord, the God of armies, has said: Because you have said this, I will make my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and they will be burned up by it” (Jeremiah 5:14 – GN) • “My message is like a fire and like a hammer that breaks rocks in pieces.” (Jeremiah 23:29 – GN) • “Listen, I am giving you the words you must speak. Today I give you authority over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:10,11 – GN)

  28. “Those who reject me and do not accept my message have one who will judge them. The words I have spoken will be their judge on the last day!’” (John 12:48 – GN)

  29. “But when I say, ‘I will forget the LORD and no longer speak in his name,’ then your message is like a fire burning deep within me. I try my best to hold it in, but can no longer keep it back.” (Jeremiah 20:9 – GN)

  30. “They said to each other, ‘Wasn’t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:32 – GN) • “Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Peter 1:7 – GN)

  31. “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads’” (Romans 12:19,20). • “So now, listen to what the Lord Almighty, Israel’s powerful God, is saying: ‘I will take revenge on you, my enemies, and you will cause me no more trouble. I will take action against you. I will purify you the way metal is refined, and will remove all your impurity’” (Isaiah 1:24,25).

  32. “Another angel, a third one, followed them, and said in a loud voice, ‘Whoever worships the beast or its statue, whoever is branded on his forehead or his hand, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured unmixed into the cup of God’s anger. Then he will be tortured by fiery sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the lamb. The smoke from their torture will go up forever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast or its statue, or for anyone branded with its name.” (Revelation 14:9-11 – GOD’S WORD)

  33. Revelation • Jesus is a lamb • Jesus comes back with a sword in his mouth • Horns • Beasts • A dragon • Two olive trees • Seven lampstands, seven stars, seven seals, seven trumpets • A great prostitute • Three frogs • Mark of the beast and a seal of God • Fire

Israel’s holy God will become a flame, which in a single day will burn up everything, even the thorns and thistles” (Isaiah 10:17 – GN)

  36. Adam and Eve • “As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. That evening they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, and they hid from him among the trees. But the LORD God called out to the man, ‘Where are you?’ He answered, ‘I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked.’” (Genesis 3:7-10 – GN)

  37. Moses • The burning bush • The glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day [God] called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. And the glory of the Lord appeared to the Israelites like devouring fire on the top of the mountain.” (Exodus 24:16-17 – GN)

  38. Moses • “Then Moses requested, ‘Please, let me see the dazzling light of your presence.’ The LORD answered, ‘I will make all my splendor pass before you and in your presence I will pronounce my sacred name. I am the LORD, and I show compassion and pity on those I choose. I will not let you see my face, because no one can see me and stay alive, but here is a place beside me where you can stand on a rock. When the dazzling light of my presence passes by, I will put you in an opening in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back but not my face.’” (Exodus 33:18-23 – GN)

  39. Moses • “The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and pronounced his holy name, the LORD. 42. Daniel • “I looked up and saw someone who was wearing linen clothes and a belt of fine gold. His body shone like a jewel. His face was as bright as a flash of lightning, and his eyes blazed like fire. His arms and legs shone like polished bronze, and his voice sounded like the roar of a great crowd. I was the only one who saw the vision. Those who were with me did not see anything, but they were terrified and ran and hid. I was left there alone, watching this amazing vision. I had no strength left, and my face was so changed that no one could have recognized me. When I heard his voice, I fell to the ground unconscious and lay there face downward. • Then a hand took hold of me and raised me to my hands and knees; I was still trembling. The angel said to me, ‘Daniel, God loves you. Stand up and listen…” (Daniel 10:5-10 – GN)

  46. “But the LORD says, ‘Now I will do something and be greatly praised. Your deeds are straw that will be set on fire by your very own breath. You will be burned to ashes like thorns in a fire. Everyone, both far and near, come look at what I have done. See my mighty power!’” (Isaiah 33:10-13 – CEV)

  47. “The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: ‘Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?’ He who walks righteously and speaks what is right…” (Isaiah 33:14-15 – NIV)

  48. “My dear friends, we are now God's children, but it is not yet clear what we shall become. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he really is.
