  2. Section 1 of the Exam • You will have 60 minutes to read four or five passages and answer 50-55 questions (with five choices each) • The MC section is 45% of your overall score • Multiple choice scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly. There is no penalty for guessing.

Types of MC Questions • Vocabulary in context • Inference of meaning/drawing conclusions • Rhetorical/literary techniques • Passage and author’s purpose • Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement • Organization—I, II, III type questions • EXCEPT/NOT • Footnotes • The passages will vary, but there will ALWAYS be an archaic (pre 1900s) passage.

  8. Strategically Approach the Test Phase 1:Answer the items you are confident you can answer correctly. Phase 2: Go back through the text and answer the items you skipped. Identify and eliminate the choices you are relatively sure are incorrect. Phase 3: Guess…but think critically. Look out for absolutes—all, only, every, etc.

  9. Tips for Phase 2 • Eliminate choices that are definitely wrong or unlikely • Eliminate choices that do not link grammatically to the stem of the question • Eliminate choices that would be logically excluded by other choices

  10. Patterns of Wrong Answer Choices • They require only surface reading, not a close understanding. • They are simplistic—have less depth • Provide only generalities • Unrelated to the question • Unrelated to the material in the passage • One part of the answer is correct, but not the other

  11. General Tips • Quickly skim the questions to get an idea about what they are asking you • Read actively—annotate the text • Read behind and ahead for questions that ask you to refer to a specific part of the text • Use the test as a source of information—sometimes another question will help you answer an item you are stuck on
