  3. Socialization • The process of training children to live as part of a group • Building a sense of belonging • Teaching children about culture, or way of life

  4. Nurturance • Includes the physical aspects of child care • Feeding • Dressing • bathing • Meeting mental needs- Providing a stimulating environment • Reading • Talking/playing • Meeting Socio-emotional needs • Helping child feel secure and loved

  5. Guidance & Discipline • Guiding children in their daily interactions • Includes words and actions that parents use to influence their child’s behavior • Discipline is the use of methods and techniques to teach children self-control

Discipline Punishment Teaches children behaviors that will help them guide themselves Use reasoning and explaining to teach correct behaviors Use logical consequences like redirection, removal, time out Adults explain to children why they should or should not use certain behaviors Is used with love and understanding Involves negative consequences that may or may not teach appropriate behavior Uses Corporal punishment (hitting, spanking, biting, pinching etc) to correct behaviors Love withdrawal: when parents threaten or suggest some form of separation (telling children they do not want them or love them, telling children they will give them away, giving the silent treatment) Uses power and dominance and fear as a way to control behavior Is used when parent is mad or frustrated

  12. Parenting Styles When children leave babyhood, parents must begin guidance and discipline. Within a year or two parents develop a parenting style

  13. AUTHORITARIAN “Because I said so!” “Do as I say, not as I do” “My way or the highway!” Main objective is to make children completely obedient Expect children to respect authority with little or no explanation as to why children should obey More likely to use physical punishment

  15. Permissive“The kids call the shots” Over involved No rules No structure Too Lenient/easy Scared of making child cry

Democratic“Let’s work this out”“Can we find a compromise?” Compromise between the extremes Clear rules and boundaries are set and explained Child are allowed freedoms within the guidelines Children may be allowed to help set some rules and decide some consequences for behavior Children learn self-discipline in a positive and encouraging setting
