Explanation of this Bridge • The opening day of the I-35 Mississippi River Bridge was on November of 1967. • This bridge was maintained by the Minnesota Department of Transportation and was designed as a truss arch bridge (deck arch truss bridge). As seen by this example of my background on this slide. • Longest Span: 456.0 feet (139 m) • Total length: 1,907.0 feet (581.3 m) • Width: 113.3 feet (34.5 m) • Height: 115 feet (35 m) • Clearance below: 64.0 feet (19.5 m)

Description of Failure • At 6:05 p.m. CDT on August 1, 2007, with rush hour bridge traffic moving slowly through the limited number of lanes, the central span of the bridge suddenly gave way, followed by the adjoining spans. • The structure and deck collapsed into the river and onto the riverbanks below, the south part toppling 81 feet (25 m) eastward in the process.

  4. Corrective Actions • 1.) One corrective actions that could’ve taken place is more scheduled regulatory check ups for this bridge. • 2.) Once built, the builders should’ve focused more on the idea of mass traffic on this bridge and more additions to make a better foundation to keep this bridge in place

Summary of Final Action The event that took place on August 1, 2007 of this bridge’s destruction was basically spontaneous, and of course when something spontaneous comes up, you can’t really currently do anything to stop this type of destruction. We were not prepared for the current situation, but we could’ve prepared for the worst and could’ve made better additions to make a better foundation. The investigation and rescue efficiency wasn’t the best because we are not prepared for this situation, that I think should be change for anything sort of event like this. They will rebuild this bridge and this time, hopefully, will make it where nothing will go wrong at all; also, they should do check ups more often, even if there is nothing wrong, it doesn’t hurt to check once in a while.
