ZEUS By Alex & Matt
Background • Zeus is the God of the Gods, the sky, weather and lightning. • He is the supreme ruler of Mount Olympus and of the Pantheon of Gods, who reside there. • He became the Father of the Gods by tricking his father Cronus into eating a rock and barfing out all the children that he ate. • His brother Poseidon controls the sea, earthquakes and horses. His other brother Hades was left with the underworld to take care of. • He is known to have affairs with many women. • Zeus is extremely strong and tall and has two main symbols, which are his thunder bolt and an eagle.
His Role in Book 1 • Zeus’s role in Book 1 starts when Achilles withdraws from the War and asks him mother Thetis to turn Zeus against the Greeks. • Zeus reluctantly agrees to help Thetis, though doing so antagonises his wife Hera. • Some significant quotes from Zeus in Book 1 are: “This is going to mean trouble!” and “when I lay my unconquerable hands on you.” Both of these quotes were aimed at his wife Hera who had made him lose his temper over her questioning of his decisions.
Character of Zeus in Book 1 • Zeus is not very involved in family affairs and is usually drawn into things he’d rather not be involved in such as the decision over Achilles and Agamemnon. • He clearly does not feel secure in his power as he has to threaten Hera when she questions his decision and maybe this is because he fears that he will be overthrown from power, like he previously had if he does not assert his power.
Interesting Facts • The name Zeus means “heavenly”. • His father Cronus swallowed his children because he feared one of them would overthrow him as he had done to his father Ouranos. Rhea (wife of Cronus) hid Zeus from Cronus and then Zeus went on to overthrow him. • Zeus, although husband to his wife Hera, was often known for disguising himself in various forms and seduce appealing maidens.
