Let’s cover the process of how to safely jump-start a battery: 1. First of all make sure the problem is with the battery. a. Are the car headlights dim? Dim headlights indicate a dead battery. 3. If battery terminals are corroded, clean the cable and terminals before jump- starting. a. Use a wire brush and mixture of baking soda and water to clean the terminals. b. Make sure to reconnect the terminals properly before jump-starting the car. 4. Get a charged battery. a. Get a working car or battery for jump-starting. b. Turn off all the accessories of the working car.
5. Get a jumper cable. a. Make sure that the jumper cables are untangled. b. The red and the black ends of jumper cables should never touch each other. 6. Connect the jumper cables in the following order: a. Connect one red clamp to the Positive (+) terminal of the dead battery and other red clamp to Positive (+) terminal of charged battery. b. Connect one black clamp to the Negative (-) terminal of the charged battery and other black clamp to a piece of grounded metal. c. Use an unpainted surface or a spot on the engine block without moving mechanical parts that the cable could interfere with. This will act as a ground and decrease the risk of accidents. 7. Start the working car and let it idle for a few minutes. Press the accelerator to just a little above idle for 30 to 60 seconds. This charges the dead battery. 8. Then try to start the dead car. If it doesn’t start, remove the last connection, restart the working car and allow 5 minutes of charging before trying to start the other car again.
9. Once the car starts, remove the jumper cables. Remove the cables in reverse order in which they were attached. Don’t let the clamps touch each other. Also replace any battery covers if necessary. 10. Keep your foot on the gas, and press the accelerator to above idle for 5 minutes to 20 minutes before turning it off.
