PEOPLE Anthony Albanese Australia's Current Prime Minister and His Political Journey  BY MOHIT-KUMAR-SHARMA  MAR 13, 2023 09:35  Anthony Albanese is the current Prime Minister of Australia, having assumed office on May 23, 2022, after leading the Australian Labor Party (ALP) to victory in the federal election. Albanese's ascension to the top job was the culmination of a long and distinguished career in politics that began in the 1980s. Early Life and Education Anthony Albanese was born on March 2, 1963, in the inner-Sydney suburb of Camperdown. His parents, Maryanne and Carlo Albanese, were both active in the Labor Party, and his father was a long-time union official. Albanese attended St Mary's Cathedral College and later St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. He went on to study economics and history at the University of Sydney, where he became involved in student politics and joined the ALP. Political Career After graduating from university, Albanese worked as a research officer for the Transport Workers Union before being elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1991. He served in that role until 1996, when he was elected to the federal parliament as the Member for Grayndler. Albanese quickly established himself as a

  2. rising star within the ALP and was appointed to a number of shadow portfolios in opposition. Following the election of the Rudd government in 2007, Albanese was appointed Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. He held that role until the defeat of the Gillard government in 2013, after which he served as Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport until the election of the Shorten opposition in 2019. In opposition, Albanese held a number of key portfolios, including Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, and Shadow Minister for Tourism. He was also a key member of the ALP's leadership group and served as the party's Deputy Leader from 2013 to 2019. Leadership of the ALP In May 2019, following the defeat of the Shorten opposition, Albanese announced his candidacy for the leadership of the ALP. He was elected unopposed and became the party's 21st leader. As leader, Albanese focused on rebuilding the ALP's electoral support and developing policies to address key issues such as climate change, economic inequality and social justice. Under Albanese's leadership, the ALP went into the 2022 federal election with a platform that included commitments to increase funding for health and education, create a national integrity commission, address climate change through investment in renewable energy and reduce inequality through tax reform. The party also committed to restoring penalty rates for workers and increasing the minimum wage. Victory in the 2022 Election Albanese's leadership and the ALP's platform resonated with voters, and the party won a convincing victory in the 2022 federal election. The ALP secured 89 seats in the House of Representatives, giving it a clear majority, while the Liberal-National Coalition won just 58 seats. Albanese was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 23, 2022, becoming the first Labor leader to win a federal election since Kevin Rudd in 2007.
