  2. Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala in southern India. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here in his Anantha Shayana posture (reclining posture on the serpent Anantha). The temple is considered one of the richest temples in the world, with its treasure estimated to be worth billions of dollars. The treasure was discovered in 2011 when the Supreme Court of India ordered a secret vault in the temple to be opened, revealing six vaults filled with gold, jewels, and other precious artifacts. History of the Temple: The origin of the temple is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to have been in existence since the 8th century AD. The temple was later rebuilt and renovated by various rulers, including the kings of the Chera dynasty, the Travancore kings, and the rulers of the Venad kingdom. Architecture: The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture and covers an area of 24000 sq. meters. The temple complex has four entrances, with the main entrance facing east. The temple has a seven-tiered gopuram (tower) at the main entrance, which is 30 meters tall. The temple has a rectangular tank called Padma Theertham, which is believed to have healing powers. The temple also has a 100-foot-high flagstaff made of gold and a Nataka Sala (theatre) where cultural events are held. The main shrine of the temple is located in the inner sanctum, where the idol of Lord Padmanabhaswamy is worshipped. The idol is made of a special composition called Katusarkara Yogam, which is a mixture of several rare herbs, minerals, and metals. Treasure: As mentioned earlier, the temple's treasure was discovered in 2011 when the Supreme Court of India ordered a secret vault in the temple to be opened. The vaults contained gold coins, jewelry, diamonds, and other precious artifacts, which are believed to be from the time of the Chera dynasty.

  3. The treasure is estimated to be worth billions of dollars, making it one of the richest temples in the world. However, the temple's trust has decided not to open the other vaults, citing religious and security reasons. Festivals: The temple celebrates several festivals throughout the year, with the Navaratri festival being the most important. During this festival, the temple is decorated with lights, and various cultural events are held. Another important festival celebrated in the temple is the Alpasi festival, which is dedicated to Lord Padmanabhaswamy. The festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Alpasi (October/November). Conclusion: Padmanabhaswamy Temple is not just a temple but also a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. The temple's treasure is a testimony to the region's past glory and attracts thousands of tourists every year. However, the temple's trustees have decided to preserve the treasure, which is a wise decision, as it is not just a treasure but a part of the temple's history and legacy.
