  1. I. Essay writing A. Mr. Hoover’s five point plan for the basics of essay writing

  2. Introduction-An introduction is meant to introduce the essay. This should include: a) Hook-This captures the reader’s attention (aka Mr. Hoover) b) Thesis-This is the main idea of your paper. Think of it as a roadmap to your essay.

  3. 2. Body Paragraphs-You should always, always, always write four body paragraphs. Each paragraph should be five or more sentences. The end of each paragraph should have a transition statement to the following paragraph. The paragraphs need to include facts.

  4. a) Topic sentence-This should be the first sentence of a paragraph. This tells the reader what to expect in the paragraph.

  5. b) Transition statement-This should be in the last sentenceof a paragraph. This provides a connection to the next paragraph.

  6. c) You should have at least three-five facts in each paragraph.

  7. 3. Conclusion-A conclusion wraps up your essay. This should include: a) A re-statement of thesis in different words. b) Larger connection-This connects your paper to specific facts outside the essay. This is your last chance to drive home the thesis.

  9. 5. First person/second person-Do not use first or second person perspective. a) First person (I or we) b) Second person (you)
