  4. America 1958 The U.S launched its first satellite Explorer 1 designed by the U.S army under the direction of rocket scientist Wernher von Braun

  6. Who was Wernher von Braun? He is well known as a leader of what has been called the “rocket team”, which developed the V-2 ballistic missile for the Nazis during WWII

  7. NASA • In 1958 President Dwight Eisenhower Signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration

  8. Later two national security programs were created: • The first, led by U.S. Air Force, dedicated itself to exploiting the military potential of space • The second, led by CIA, known as Corona, used orbiting satellites to gather intelligence on the Soviet Union
