  1. Ms. Lonsdale’s 7th Grade Math Notes for the week of February 17th to 21st.

  2. Homeroom Read SILENTLY until class begins.

  3. Bellwork Monday, 2-17-14

  4. Announcements • Tutoring today until 4:15pm (ratios/proportions). • Last week’s homework is due on TUESDAY • This week’s homework is due on FRIDAY. • Test on FRIDAY!! (Thursday for 6th)

  5. Random Factoid The only president to be unanimously elect was George Washington.

  6. Circles

  7. Think It Circle – A closed curve with all its points the same distance from the center.

  8. Think It • Diameter – The distance from one end of a circle to the other through the center. • Radius – The distance from the outside to the center of a circle.

  9. Think It The radius is always half of the diameter or.. The diameter is always twice as big as the radius 2r = d

  10. Circumference is… • A special type of perimeter. It is the distance around the outside of a circle. • Think travel, distance, length CIRCUMFERENCECIRCUMFERENCE

  11. FIND THE RELATIONSHIP! For each figure… Find the diameter! Find the radius! Find the circumference (using string)! What is the relationship

  12. Finding the Relationship Activity • Supplies: • String • Rulers • Circular Items (They’ve changed from what is listed on the worksheet)

  13. Ruler Review • Make sure you start your measurements at the zero mark. • Make sure that your string is pulled taut.

  14. Group Procedures • Only talk about the assignment. • Only talk to your group mates. • Talk in quiet voices. • -10% if the policies are not being followed. • You will have 10 minutes to complete this activity.

  15. THE MAGIC NUMBER! π

  16. THE MAGIC NUMBER! π (pi) The number that represents the ratio of circumference to diameter ()

  17. THE MAGIC NUMBER! π (pi) A number just a little bit bigger than 3 that you can always multiply by the diameter to find the circumference of a circle.

  18. THE MAGIC NUMBER! π (pi) π = 3.14159265359…

  19. π = 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582097494459230781640628620899862803482534211706798214808651328230664709384460955058223172535940812848111745028410270193852110555964462294895493038196442881097566593344612847564823378678316527120190914564856692346034861045432664821339360726024914127372458700660631558817488152092096282925409171536436789259036001133053054882046652138414695194151160943305727036575959195309218611738193261179310511854807446237996274956735188575272489122793818301194912983367336244065664308602139494639522473719070217986094370277053921717629317675238467481846766940513200056812714526356082778577134275778960917363717872146844090122495343014654958537105079227968925892354201995611212902196086403441815981362977477130996051870721134999999837297804995105973173281609631… Irrational

  20. Circumference is… CIRCUMFERENCE CIRCUMFERENCE the distance around a circle. C = 2 πr C = πd

  21. Helpful Hint!! • Crust = Pi Dough! • Circumference = Pi*D

  22. Work It r = d = C = 20 centimeters

  23. Work It r = d = C = 48 centimeters

  24. Work It r = d = C = 8 meters

  25. Work It r = d = C = 3 meters

  26. Bookwork • Pg. 396 Questions 1-11 • Finish early?  Complete the first three problems of your homework and then talk to me about extra credit.

  27. Homeroom Read SILENTLY until class begins!!

  28. Tuesday, 2-18-14 Bellwork

  29. Announcements • Last week’s homework is due TODAY! • Tutoring on Thursday! • This week’s homework is due on FRIDAY. • Test on FRIDAY!!

  30. Interesting Factoid President Grover Cleveland is the only president to be elected to two nonconsecutive terms. He was the 22nd and 24th president.

  31. Results from Friday…

  32. THE MAGIC NUMBER! π

  33. Circumference is… CIRCUMFERENCE CIRCUMFERENCE • The distance around a circle. C = 2 πr C = πd

  34. Work It r = d = C = 20 centimeters

  35. Area is… • A measure of space. The room inside of the circle. • Think of all the space that you can use or fill. AREA AREA

  36. Area is… A measure of space. AREA A = πr 2

  37. Work It r = d = A = 20 centimeters

  38. Work It r = d = A = C = 48 centimeters

  39. Work It r = d = A = C = 8 meters

  40. Work It r = d = A = C = 3 meters

  41. Rodeo Example Problem At the Houston Rodeo, the circular stage is 40 feet across. The show organizers want to put lights around the outside of the stage. How many feet will the organizers need to cover with lights?

  42. Work It Roniqueko is helping to build a circular garden in his backyard. If this garden has a diameter of 14 meters, about how much space does the garden take up?

  43. Work It 8 cm 12 ft Area = _____ Circumference = _____

  44. Work It Jeffrey measures a truck’s tire mark for one complete revolution as 100.48 inches long. What is the diameter of the tire.

  45. Work It 16 m 10 in Circumference = _____ Area = _____
