Be sure to clearly link all your ideas to your claim that you made in the thesis. • Ex. of a claim= Guy on a buffalo is the epitome of man because of his ruggedness, his physical prowess, and his sense of justice. • In your body paragraphs, be sure to clearly link his ruggedness, physical prowess and sense of justice to how it makes him the “epitome of man”.

You created a clear and controlling thesis statement…now do what you say you will do! • Ex. of a thesis=Guy on a buffalo is the epitome of man because of his ruggedness, his physical prowess, and his sense of justice. • Body paragraph #1 should discuss his ruggedness! • Body paragraph #2 should discuss his physical prowess! • Body paragraph #3 should discusshis sense of justice!

  4. How to Develop Ideas in an Essay Or…don’t just make a statement…back it up for Heaven’s sake!

  5. Ways to develop an idea: • A= Give an example • B= Give a quote • C= Use critical thinking techniques to expand on the idea

A= Give an example • Topic sentence= The Guy on a Buffalo is a man we should all strive to be like because of his sense of justice.(Once you present an idea, you are responsible for coming up with an example to PROVE it.) • Examples? • Makes the “Indian guy” pay for shooting at him, but doesn’t kill him. He put his pistol to his head, however he didn’t shoot…he instead beats him up, and generously allows him to live. • Chastises the hunters, but doesn’t resort to violence.

  7. A= Give an example continued • After you give your example, be sure to EXPLAIN WHY/HOW the example is important. • Ex. The GOAB is nice because he saves the baby. (This supports the claim that he is nice, but this idea should be explained fully.) • The GOAB is nice because he saves the baby which shows that he is not just concerned with himself. He sacrifices his time and energy to care for this baby which he has no apparent ties to.

B= Give a quote • Topic sentence= The Guy on a Buffalo is a man we should all strive to be like because of his sense of justice.(Once you present an idea, you can use a quote to support it.) • Examples? • “Break your gun on a stump” = he punishes the “indian guy” by taking away his weapon which is a firm, but fair punishment. • “Don’t wake up” implies that the man is unconscious, but not dead. • “You huntin’ buffalo?” “No we’re cool.” He approaches the hunters, but because there were no buffalo harmed he merely warns them in a stern way which is an appropriate level of intervention in this case. (How The Guy on a Buffalo reacts to getting shot at the hunter remains to be seen, but if GOAB is true to his character…God help that hunter!) • In your defence for not using quotes, it must be said that in order to use quotes for this assignment you would probably have to watch the videos a few times.

C= Use critical thinking techniques to expand on the idea • Examples of techniques that could apply to this assignment: • Draw conclusions based on valid evidence. • Read between the lines. • For example: One student argued that GOAB’s wild, and unkempt beard was a sign of his fearlessness. • “his willingness to boldly wear such a beard implies that he doesn’t care about what others think and he will live his life as he sees fit.” THIS SHOWS CRITICAL THINKING!

Here is an idea that needs developing: • The Guy on a Buffalo is clearly a nice person. • With your partner, come up with examples/quotes to support this idea. • Saves the baby • Saves the buffalo • Spares the life of the “Indian guy” • “You want this baby?” “Cheaper than adoption.” (implies that she wanted a baby) • Others?

  11. How could we develop this paragraph: • TGOAB is a nice person because he saved the baby. He protected it from dangerous situations. He also found a home for it. These were nice things to do. • 1. Explain WHY/HOW he saved the baby. • 2. Give examples of HOW he protected it from dangerous situations. • 3. Explain WHY/HOW finding a home for it makes him “nice”…link it all back to the main idea of the paragraph. • *Re-write the above paragraph, but DEVELOP it.

  12. Develop the following paragraph: • RE-WRITE THE FOLLOWING AND ADD EXAMPLES, QUOTES, OR USE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS TO DEVELOP THE IDEAS. We will be sharing examples of the re-written paragraphs, so make sure you have thoroughly developed the ideas! • Food is important to us. It is important for health reasons. It is important for social reasons. Food is something many of us take for granted. We need to be reminded that not everyone is lucky enough to have a plethora of food available.
