  2. Case 1Sez, Simon You are performing surveillance for MRSA LabID in all inpatient and outpatient units by location in your facility. You receive a microbiology report on an 89 YO male admitted to the med/surg unit on 11/25/10 from the ER. Patient had a lower respiratory infection on admission and his last admission was 2 years ago.

  3. Case 1Sez, Simon Is this a LabID event? Why or why not?

  4. Case 1Sez, Simon To what location or locations will this be attributed? Why?

  5. Case 1Sez, Simon Suppose you are conducting surveillance for pneumonia. You see in the progress notes the patient has purulent sputum. Can you use this information to determine whether the definition for pneumonia has been met?

  7. Case 1Sez, Simon Another culture was obtained from bronchial washings on 12/3/10 while the patient was on the med/surg unit and was positive for MRSA. Is this a LabID event? Why or why not?

  14. Case 3Queen, Ima You are conducing surveillance for surgical site infections associated with hip and knee arthroplasty. You receive this report from the IP at a neighboring hospital about a patient who underwent a knee replacement surgery at your facility and now has an SSI.

  15. Case 3Queen, Ima The patient underwent a left total knee replacement on 3/7/11. The procedure went well and the patient was doing fine until she fell and the wound dehisced on 3/9. She had and I and D that same day, with closure, and was discharged on 3/10 doing well.

  16. Case 3 Queen, Ima Patient was admitted to neighboring facility on 3/17 with redness and pain at the incision site and S. aureus and Pseudomonas were isolated from drainage. Is this an SSI?

  17. Case 3Queen, Ima To what procedure is the SSI attributed? Are you going to enter this event into NHSN under your reporting plan?
