  2. The Reverend Parris… • was not well-liked. • had a reputation for being easily offended and feeling persecuted. (You know the type.) • didn’t have kids, wasn’t that good with them anyway. • believed, like most Puritans, kids “should be seen and not heard.”

  3. Puritan culture • Strict • Religious • Hard working • No Entertainment (not even books – unless they were religious!) • Potent cider was OK, though  • “Raising the roof”

  4. The “Meeting House” • No sleeping! • No skipping! • OH, they would find out…

  5. Focus on Community • Nosiness – a tradition in Salem • Community – safety from dangers of wilderness Physical Spiritual “the Devil’s last preserve”

  6. Government in Salem • British royalty replaced with Junta (“hoonta”) – assembly or council • Theocracy for the sake of unity and protection • Time of uncertainty • Suspicion that dark forces were involved • Problem: balance between order and freedom

  7. Witchcraft accusation • Served more than one purpose • Way of confessing sins • Neighborly quarrels / rivalries • Greed for land
