  1. Dr. Sylvester Graham 1 Born: July 5, 1794 as the 17th of 17 children Birthplace: West Suffield, CT Died: September 11, 1851 Religion: Presbyterian. He worked as a Presbyterian minister at first Childhood: His father, a minister, passed away when he was an infant. His mother was institutionalized for being insane soon after. Graduated from Amherst College Occupation: Activist-reformed the dietary world, Author American Vegetarian Society Co-Founder (1850) Author of books:Treatise on Bread and Bread-Making (1837)

The Philosophy of Sacred History Considered in Relation to Human Aliment and the Wines of Scripture (1855, posthumous) • He was attacked by a mob of angry bakers after his book Treatise on Bread and Bread-Making was published because it reduced their businesses since the book taught how to make homemade bread.   2. Dr. Sylvester Graham 2 • His views • Special diet • Vegetarianism • Created Graham Bread, a more wholesome bread made from Graham wheat, or coarse wheat. He was against white bread. • “Bread should be baked in such a way that it will…require and secure a full exercise of the teeth in mastication.” • No spices • Fresh foods and vegetables • Eat meals at the same times each day. • Fresh milk, cheese, and eggs in moderation • Temperance • Sexual restraint • Sleeping on hard mattresses. • Open windows • Grahamites: followers of Graham’s preachings.
