2. This music seminar, designed for students and professionals, will entail four days of intensive class/individual instruction in Salsa/Latin Music. Students will receive the benefit of instruction focused on their individual instruments as well as ensemble workshops. The four days of instruction will culminate in a joint concert with select students and instructors as part of the opening evening of the 2005 Los Angeles Salsa Congress.The instruments to be taught at the seminar are those most common to the Latin Genre, i.ePiano, Bass, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophones/Flute,Timbales,Congas,Bongos and Vocals.Other instrumentalists, if interested, will be considered on an individual basis.

3. Internationally renowned musicians of the Latin music genre will teach the seminar. Some of whom are considered legendary in their field. All of the instructors have been associated with top artists in Latin music, such as; Tito Puente, Machito, Tito Rodriguez, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Blades, Ray Barretto etc. The instructors this year will be: Johnny Pacheco – Honorary Musical director Oscar Hernandez-Piano/Musical DirectorAndy Gonzalez-BassJohn Walsh-TrumpetJimmy Bosch- TromboneMitch Frohman- Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone) and FluteManny Oquendo- Timbales, Bongos (Old School)Pablo “Chino” Nunez – Timbales, Bongos (New School)Bobby Allende – CongasVocalist-Soneros: Ray De La Paz, Frankie Vasquez, Willie Torres

4. The schedules of the seminar is as follows: • Day One: Monday May 23rd 5pm-9pm Meet & Greet, and after a brief orientation, we break into individual classes. • Day Two: Tuesday May 24th 10am-1pm individual classes 1pm-2pm lunch 2pm-5pm Ensembles • Day Three:Wednesday May 25th 10am-1pm individual classes 1pm-2pm lunch 2pm-5pm Ensembles • Day Four: Thursday May 26th 10am-2pm Final Ensembles and dress rehearsals for the evening concert

5. What the students receive: All students will receive a CD with the music they are expected to learn and perform as well as the printed sheet music of these songs. Individual instructors will also be providing additional materials pertaining to their class needs. All students will receive a certificate of completion signed by the instructors.

6. Oscar Hernandez • Oscar Hernandez has long been considered one of the most prominent pianist/arranger / composer and producer in the Latin/Latin Jazz and Salsa music world. • He has recorded and performed with some of the most important artists of this genre. Artists such as: Tito Puente, Celia Cruz,Ruben Blades, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Paul Simon to name a few. • He is currently the leader of the "Spanish Harlem Orchestra". • For the LA musicians seminar Oscar Hernandez will cover the role the piano/pianist plays within a Latin/Salsa context as it applies to the music that will be covered.

7. Pablo “Chino” Nunez Pablo "Chino" Nunez is one of the most solicited percussionists in the salsa genre of this generation. His work has taken him to all forums and venues all over the world.Currently Performing with Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Musical director for The Ray Sepulveda and Johnny Rivera Orchestras; Pablo to date has performed and recorded with: Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Ray Barretto, Cheo Feliciano, Emmanuel, Oscar de Leon, Hector Lavoe, Isaac Delgado, Larry Harlow, Mon Rivera, Willie Colon, Rafael de Jesus, and Luis Perico Ortiz, to name a few. “Timbal” Curriculum: Timbales New School 1. Establish each student’s ability on instrument. 2. Teach Basics such as Single & Double Hand Cascara in Both Claves, Bell Patterns in Both claves, Teaching basic music reading for timbales. 3. How to play with an ensemble. 4. For advanced players: Creativo/Created rhythms within the structure of a song, Setting up Hits for Brass sections, reviewing music to be performed at Concert. Learning how to communicate with the ensemble through performance.  Curriculum: Bongo New School  1. Establish each student’s ability on instrument. 2. Teach Basics: Martillo, Simple repique patterns, Bell Patterns on both Claves. 3. How to play with an ensemble, Basic reading for Bongo. 4. For Advanced Players: Creativo/Created Rhythms within the structure of a song, Advanced repique patterns, Bell calls for sections of a musical arrangement, learning how to communicate with the ensemble through performance.

8. John “Juancito” Walsh John Walsh (trumpet), who as a youth imagined he was born to play drums, became a trumpet player at age 12. Since moving to New York in 1985, Mr. Walsh has performed and/or recorded with Lincoln Center's Afro Latin Orchestra, Tito Puente, Mel Torme, Lionel Hampton, Paul Simon, EddiePalmieri, The Chico O'Farrill Orchestra, Chris Washburne & SYOTOS, Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Machito Orchestra, Johnny Pacheco, Wyclef Jean, Max Roach, Celia Cruz, La India, Tito Nieves, Ray Barretto, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and the Barrio Boyz, among many others. In this seminar, Mr. Walsh will focus on the particular needs and styles of playing trumpet in an Afro Latin ensemble. Special attention will be given to soloing, section playing and moñas.

9. Jimmy Bosch Leading salsa/world music trombone icon, band leader and producer of his latest CD, El Avion De La Salsa," Jimmy performed and recorded with some of the highest profile Latin artists including Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Israel Cachao Lopez, Oscar D' Leon, Ruben Blades, Fania All-Stars, and many others. Known for his fiery trombone solos and swinging moñas, Jimmy is considered an expert in this art form of creating spontaneous riffs to elevate the music to a higher energy level causing a spontaneous combustion between the band and the audience. Trombone classes will cover various approaches to executing this art form. Improvisation, creating moñas, ear training, section playing, reviewing and rehearsing the parts of the chosen music for the opening night performance of the Salsa Congress will be worked on intensively.

10. Mitch Frohman Grew up in the Bronx. For over 25 years he was the sax and flute soloist with the Tito Puente Orchestra and Latin/Jazz Ensemble. He has played and recorded with all of the top artists in this music such as mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. He is the saxophone soloist on the theme song of HBO’s mega hit “Sex and the City”. In this seminar, Mr. Frohman will emphasize on saxophone/flute section playing, saxophone/flute soloing,, instrument interpretation and phrasing of Latin Music.

11. Manny Oquendo Manny Oquendo and Libre Manny Oquendo began percussion studies in 1945 and gained drumming Experience with the bands of Carlos Valero, Luis del Campo, Juan "El Boy" Torres,Jose Budet, Juanito Sanabria, Marcelino Guerra, Jose Curbelo and Pupi Campo before becoming Tito Puente's bongo player in 1950. Four years later Oquendo was with Tito Rodriquez and with Vicentico Valdez in 1955. For the following six years, Oquendo freelanced and recorded for New York's top bands. In 1962 he settled with the Eddie Palmieri orchestra. Before 1974 ended, Oquendo's Conjunto Libre came into being. Oquendo gained worldwide recognition in 1983 with his recording of "Little Sunflower," considered one of the best recordings.

12. ANDYGOZALEZ Andy Gonzalez is widely recognized as one of the world's preeminent Latin jazz bassists and scholars. His work with his brother Jerry in the Fort Apache Band is considered by many to be the new standard for the genre. He has held the bass chair with greats Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barreto, McCoy Tyner, Don Grolnik and countless others. Andy is musical director of the internationally renown group 'Manny Oquendo y Cojunto Libre' and has produced and contributed to countless recordings and commercials.

13. Singers/Soneros Objectives: • Breathing methods • Vocal warm up • Section singing • Harmonizing • Soneo old and new school • Soloing • Song form For over two decades, these three fabulous singers have been at the top of their game. The extraordinary voice and experience of Ray De La Paz; the soneo and the zest of Frankie Vasquez; and the eagerness, potential and ability of Willy Torres are combined in this upcoming seminar to offer you the best and most correct way to sing Salsa/Cha-cha/Bolero/ Latin Music.

14. Bobby Allende Bobby Allende established his role in percussion as a member of Tito Puente’s Rumberito All Stars. His dedication to his craft and spirited personality has earned him the respect of some of the top names in the industry and the endorsements of Pearl, Vic Firth and Zildjian to name a few. His versatility with timbales, congas and bongos has allowed him to work with artists such as Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon and even crossed genres to work with Paul Simon, Marion Meadows and Spyro Gyra. For the seminar, Bobby will cover basic drumming techniques, accompaniment and time placement.
