  2. 3-31-14 Bell Work: • Explain the issue of the Nile Perch.

  5. Review: If you do not want a pet anymore, what should you do with it? Leave it at a park. Return it to the store. Let it go free. Any of these options.

  6. 3-31-14 Objective: • I will research introduced species. HW: Look for information and pictures about your species.

  7. Vocabulary: • Introduced species- A species that was taken out of their natural environment and placed somewhere else.

  8. Notes: 300 different types of fish used to be found in Lake Victoria. 99% of these fish could not be found anywhere else. By the 1950’s the lake was being overfished. The Nile Perch were secretly added to the lake to help with the fish shortage.

  9. Notes: Many fish species in the lake have become extinct due to the Nile Perch eating them. Some of the fish ate algae. Now the algae growth in the lake has increased. More people have jobs now. More fish to feed more people. Nile Perch may be running out of food.

  11. How did the amount of fish caught in Lake Victoria change from 1960-1989? It greatly increased. How did the introduction of Nile perch affect the food supply of the people who lived near Lake Victoria? It gave then more food. What effect did the introduction of Nile perch have on the organisms that lived in the lake? It ate everything! What do you think will happen to Lake Victoria in 20 years?

  13. Task: • As a group read about your species. • With your group find information about your species. • Write down the name. • Write down where it was originally found. • Write down the new place it is causing problems.

  14. Make a poster to show the class the research you have found about your species. • You will present this to the class on Thursday. • All group members must participate.

  15. Nile Perch Example: • Originally native to Lake Chad, Nile River, Zaire River, and Niger River • Introduced to Lake Victoria in 1950’s • Now present in huge numbers throughout Lake Victoria
