  1. EQS for 17 Ethinyloestradiol (EE2) Environment Agency, UK

  2. EE2 - background Synthetic estrogen –potent endocrine disrupting chemical Main source to the aquatic environment is sewage treatment works Several recent proposals for EQSs Industry (2008 and 2010) Switzerland (2010) UK (2008) Netherlands (2007) Range of outcomes due to differences in input data, extrapolation and interpretation

  3. QS derivation Based on the properties of EE2, QSs developed for water ecosystem (direct ecotoxicity), sediment and biota Critical route/receptor is water ecosystem Large dataset for chronic toxicity of EE2 Includes taxa whose reproductive physiology is expected to be sensitive to EE2 – fish, amphibians, (molluscs) Range of endpoints and studies undertaken including a number of life cycle studies

  4. Derivation of QS Extrapolation by SSD (as opposed to deterministic approach) Sensitive taxa (fish, amphibians, molluscs) and population-relevent endpoints (excludes plasma VTG) = data for 12 species Inputs to SSD = most sensitive endpoint Log-normal model Cannot incorporate Chinese rare minnow unbounded LOEC (0.2 ng/l) but consider in choice of AF

  5. Proposed EQS HC5 = 0.074ng/l EE2 Proposed EQS = 0.074 - 0.04ng/l EE2 • Mode of action well-understood • Relevant chronic data for sensitive taxa • Population-relevant endpoints • Good model fit • Chinese rare minnow protected? • ‘Good’ ecological status tolerates some impacts on fish recruitment AF= 1-2

  6. Choice of AF
