Core Values • EQUITY Processes should be standardized so that all students have access and can participate, with the same breadth and depth of information being offered to each family. • TRANSPARENCY and INTEGRITYAdmissions processes should be transparent so that all participants understand what options are available to them, know how to access those options, and make informed choices • STUDENT-DRIVEN CHOICEStudents should be able to express their true preferences and have those choices honored to the extent possible. Choice processes should be student-centered, not school-centered. • ACHIEVEMENT and ACCOUNTABILITYA student-driven process should help create competitiveness amongst schools, increasing the number of high-performing schools and thereby promoting higher levels of student achievement. Families should be able to hold the DOE accountable for the administration of the choice process at the highest levels

Academically Enriched Middle School Programs • District-wide programs that require students to take the Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) • Available in Districts 17, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 30 • In District 17, 18, and 22, students must have 4th grade NYS English Language Arts (ELA) and NYS Mathematics Examination combined scale scores of 1371 or more (for instance, an ELA scale score of 700 and a Math scale score of 671 would meet the eligibility requirementby adding up to 1371) • Requires the submission of a Request For Testing form • Entry grades are primarily sixth grade with extremely limited seventh grade entry in specific districts • www.nyc.gov/schools/ChoicesEnrollment/Middle

NCLB Public School Choice (NCLB PSC) • Parents of students enrolled at Title I Schools that have the classification of School In Need of Improvement (SINI) for two or more years and Persistently Low Achieving (PLA) schools can request transfers • Students currently enrolled in grades K-7 or 9-11 in a participating school and are scheduled to continue attending that school for the following school year are eligible to participate • Federal law requires that the NYCDOE give first priority to the lowest achieving low-income students. Placement also depends on seat availability in participating schools www.nyc.gov/schools/NCLB

Over-the-Counter Enrollmentfor students who are new to New York City public schools • Peak Period 2011 • August 31 - September 16 • 12 temporary student registration centers • Non-Peak Period • Mid-September through end of school year • 14 Borough Enrollment Offices • Elementary and Middle School • Register at your zoned school • If there is no zoned school for the student’s home address, visit a Borough Enrollment Office or Student Registration Center for assistance • High School • New students must register at a Borough Enrollment Office or Student Registration Center www.nyc.gov/schools/ChoicesEnrollment/NewStudents
