  1. Session 4 – Unusual Applications, SOP, etc. Mercury Speciation Workshop 330 Nantucket Blvd. Toronto, Canada M1P 2P4 Rev 1.00 Aug 2002

  2. Issues in Session Four 1 Unusual Applications? 2 Towards an SOP 3 Any other items

  3. Unusual Applications

  4. Dynamic Dilution for Source Assessment • This is slightly different than a conventional mercury CEM • Furthers work conducted by Prestbo using static dilution chamber • Allows some of the reactions that occur in ambient air to be seen • May provide a better indication of: • What enters the ecosystem • Rather than what does up the stack

  5. Towards an SOP

  6. Why an SOP ? • Allow inter-comparability of automated 1130/35 data taken anywhere

  7. Items in an SOP? • Where to take the measurement • High vertical gradients observed • Height above grade is important • Minimize building plume effects • Must be tempered by reality: • Must access the outdoor components

  8. Items in an SOP • Standardized instrument conditions • Sample time & flow rate • Desorption times and temperatures • Maintenance interval for denuder & RPF • Filter, impactor cleaning/change interval • Data processing conventions • QA/QC procedures • Procedures for instrument validation • Validate entire sample path • Calibrate MFMs, etc

  9. Items in an SOP • Calibration procedures • Requires a field portable source to be developed first!

  10. Any Other Items ?

  11. End of Session 4
