  1. Why Are You Weeping? John 20:11-18

  2. John 20:11-18 • But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; • and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. • And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” • When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. • Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” • Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). • Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” • Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

  3. Sunday The Resurrection Garden • Jesus is resurrected physically from the dead • There is a great earthquake • The angel of the Lord descends from heaven • His appearance is as lightning • His raiment is as snow • He rolls the stone away and sits upon it • The guards tremble, become as dead men, and finally flee in terror • Mary Magdalene arrives at the garden to aid in the planned anointing of his body • She sees the stone has been removed • She runs and reports to Peter and John: “They took away the Lord from the tomb, and we know not where they laid him” • Peter and John arrive at the garden (Luke 24:12; John 20:3-10) • John outruns Peter and, looking into the tomb, sees the linen cloths • Peter arrives and, entering into the tomb, sees the head napkin separated from the linen cloth • Mary Magdalene returns to the garden alone (John 20:11-18) • She stands outside the tomb weeping

  4. From Tears to Triumph • One of the most precious events in history • Our Lord’s first appearance after His resurrection • The appearance to one who loved Jesus with the deepest of loves because of what He had done for her • Crying at an empty grave • Many have wept at graves throughout the centuries • Jesus wept at the grave of Lazarus (John 11:25) • We weep because they have left us and we miss them • But the Cross and its tears were past • They had found the grave empty • Christ had risen from the dead • This should have been a time of triumph . . . not of tears

  5. The Empty Tomb • Seeing Peter and John enter the tomb gave her courage to finally stoop down and look in • What Mary began to experience would totally change her life • Two things people need to do at the tomb • Linger at the empty tomb of Jesus • Too many rush by His tomb, never thinking, never giving any thought to its meaning • Seek the truth of the empty tomb • What it means to life and to the world in all its corruption and need

  6. The Two Angels - vv.12-13 • The two angels were sitting right where Jesus’ body had been lying • Angels - messengers of God • They are the ministering spirits of God, servants sent from heaven to carry out His will • They were sent to comfort Mary in her grief • They were not seen in the tomb when Peter and John looked in • They were clothed in white • Matthew added... • like “lightning” - visible, quick, startling, striking, frightening, brilliant • like “snow” - white, pure, glistening • One of the angel's asked Mary a question: “Why are you weeping?” (v. 13)

  7. She Believed the Worst Proverbs 8:17 • “I love them that love Me; and those that seek Me early shall find Me.” • Mary Magdalene lingering alone in the garden • Mary loved her Lord and came early to the garden to express that love • But Mary believed the worst had happened!

  8. She Doubted the Promise of the Lord • Jesus had promised He would rise from the dead - John 2:19 • When we doubt God's promises, we are overcome by anxiety • Mary had come to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus • Now Mary believed the body of Jesus had been stolen • Mary believed her enemies were more powerful than Jesus • We need to doubt our doubts and believe our beliefs

  9. She Thought She Was Alone • Loneliness – Starbucks Phenomenon • You're alone and you don't feel you have a choice not to be • You feel that you're lacking attachments you had in the past • You are facing changes in your life • You feel there's no one in your life with whom you can share your feelings and experiences • Your self-perceptions are that you're unacceptable, unlovable, not worthwhile

  10. She Thought She Was Alone • Loneliness • Mary doubted the presence of the Lord • “They have taken away my Lord” • “I know not where they have laid him” • Loneliness is hard to bear • No wonder Mary was weeping that first Easter morning • Jesus was there, but Mary didn't realize it • Christians are never alone (Hebrews 13:5) • No one can take our Lord away (Matthew 28:20) • No one can take us away from our Lord (Romans 8:38‑39)

  11. Jesus Was Present • Mary sensed another presence behind her • She immediately turned around and saw Jesus standing there • But she did not know that it was Jesus • “Why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?” • Jesus knows all about our sorrows • He knew that Mary’s heart was broken • He knew that her mind was confused • He did not rebuke her! • He tenderly revealed Himself to her

  12. Jesus Was Present • Mary recognized Jesus not by sight, but by His voice • Jesus simply speaks her name • A message for everyone! • We need to fix our eyes upon Jesus and listen to His voice calling our name • Jesus called Mary by name - because she was one of His sheep • He knows His sheep by name and His sheep know the sound of His voice – John 10:3

  13. She Thought Her Life Was Over • Purpose in Life • What “The World” says • “What’s your Purpose?” Is perhaps the most important question you could answer in this lifetime. By living your Purpose it you will discover new levels of happiness, fulfilment and effectiveness. • “Purpose Driven Life” • # 1 best selling hardback of all time!

  14. She Thought Her Life Was Over • She now doubted the purpose of the Lord for her life • Everything had been different since she met Jesus • She had found a purpose for living at last • Now that He was gone she thought her life was over • But Jesus was there all the time • He was there when Mary doubted • He was there when Mary despaired • Jesus is here today to speak to your doubts and despair • Jesus spoke to Mary and removed her fears • Jesus knows about your tears and fears • The Living Christ wants to give you peace and a purpose for living

  15. The New Commission (v.17-18) • Mary was so full of joy that she reached out and embraced Jesus • Now that she had found Him, she did not want to lose Him • Immediately Jesus said “stop clinging to me” • Mary’s great love seemingly had one flaw • She wanted to cling in her love for the Lord and to the fellowship that that love brought her • Jesus was no longer just her Rabboni, her Master, He was her Lord and God

  16. The New Commission (v.17-18) • Jesus permitted the other women to hold His feet (Matthew 28:9), and He did not forbid them • Why did He say to Mary, “Do not cling to Me”? • Because He had not yet ascended to the Father • She had a job to do—to go tell His brethren that He was alive and would ascend to the Father

  17. The New Commission (v.17-18) • It would have been selfish for Mary to have kept Jesus to herself • She went to the disciples and gave them the good news - “I have seen the Lord!” • Mark 16:9-11 - these believers were mourning and weeping and that they would not believe her! • Jesus had turned her sorrow into joy • If they had believed their sorrow would also have turned to joy • Mary reported the words that Jesus had spoken to her • The importance of the Word of God • Mary could not transfer her experience to them, but she could share the Word! • It is the Word that generates faith

  18. The Empty Tomb • We should believe and obey all that Jesus has told us! • We are never alone! • We now have the greatest purpose in life that a person could ever have – to share the good news of the resurrection with others!
