Essential Group Advising Information for Juniors: Spring 2015

Attend the Group Advising session as a prerequisite to ensure you're ready for your Literacy Practicum (EDEL 445/446) this spring. Meet with your ELED advisor to review your Degree Evaluation and complete crucial tasks on your To-Do List, like updating your four-year plan and checking holds on your URSA account. Remember, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for essential courses. Don't miss out on the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions during this session.   2. Schedule an Unofficial Grad Check • Semester prior to the Literacy Practicum (EDEL 445/446) with an ELEDadvisor Call the ISET Office : 351-2929 or stop by • Your advisor will review your Degree Evaluation and answer your questions

  3. To Do List before Group Advising • Update your four-year plan • Check URSA account for ‘Holds’ and registration date • ‘Holds’ prohibit registration • Check for transfer credit accuracy

  4. Course Information • Please click on the CRN number for specific course prerequisites and information • Especially: FILM 120, GEOG 390 • ART Concentration – contact connie.stewart@unco.edu regarding classes *PTEP program requires a ‘B’ or better in ENG 122 OR ENG 123

  5. Course Information TESL 380 Prerequisites: TESL 350 for ESL concentration Or TESL 370 for Language Arts concentration SCED 375 • Please click on the CRN # • To select the correct Lab • Make certain classes are at UNC: • Look for a campus building with a room number

  6. GPA is Very Important! • 3.0 cumulative GPA is a prerequisite for the following courses: • EDEL 445/446 Literacy Block • EDEL 450 Math and Social Studies Methods • EDEL 454 Student Teaching • Consider Grade Replacement if needed

Reading Minor • It is easy to add a reading minor with the following courses: • EDRD 314 (required for ISET major) • EDRD 319 • EDRD 340 (2.75 GPA or contact instructor) • EDRD 410 (2.75 GPA or contact instructor) • EDRD 411 (prerequisite – grade of ‘B’ or higher in EDRD 410) • One of the following: • COMM 223 • COMM 350

EDFE 120 Registration • Semester prior to the Literacy Practicum EDEL 445/446 • Select the section that lists Vicky Stromberger as the instructor • Don’t forget to complete the Request for Placement Survey (resume, cooperating teacher letter) • Completed or currently enrolled in EDEL 350 unless you have completed EDRD 319 • Even if you do not presently have the required GPA (3.0), but anticipate you might

  10. Literacy Practicum • Literacy Practicum – typically the first semester of senior year. For more information see: http://www.unco.edu/teach/LP.html • Weekly schedule: • Two days (MW or TR) on campus taking methods courses: • EDEL 450 – social studies and math methods (4-6 cr.) • EDEL 421 – Math Practicum (1 cr.) • SCED 475 – science methods • EDEL 445 – intermediate literacy methods • EDEL 446 – Literacy Practicum - two full days (opposite days-methods classes) in an elementary school with an elementary teacher (mentor)

How to get your PIN • Attend Group Advising • Peel off name label (alphabetical by last name) • Go to ELED website www.unco.edu/eled  • News and Events  ELED Group Advising Survey • Use PASSCODE from name label • Take ELED Group Advising survey • Submit • Write down PIN • Register on designated date (check on URSA)

  14. Interim Registration • Registration for Interim 2014 begins October 6th • No PIN required • If applicable please check with Financial Aid regarding funding

  15. Final Notes • You can make an individual appointment after you have attended Group Advising if you have questions or need to discuss issues privately • No PIN numbers are given in individual appointments
