Guiding thought With the development of “the West,” the United States transforms an “empty” and barren, mostly desert environment, into a booming and productive area with modern and growing cities, farms, and industry. All of this takes place within a span of less than 50 years. How does this happen?????

  5. How??? • People and technology • People – Push/Pull Factors • Factors that PUSHED people to the West • Factors that PULLED people to the West • Technology – Industrial Revolution • Farming, railroads, mining, etc.

  6. Add to your notes PUSH Factors – things, events, conditions that forced people out of where they had been living – PUSHED them to the West Civil War Eastern farmland $$$ Second chance-fresh start Ethnic and Religious Oppression (and related violence-such as KKK)
