  1. MEETING OF CORE GROUP ON PRICES OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES A presentation by Department of Agriculture & Cooperation ..for Sustained & Steady Supply of Food

  2. INDEX

  3. Food-grains: Impact of Green Revolution on Production & Productivity ( 3 years moving averages) Impressive growth from mid 70s to 1987 which was followed by a plateau for a couple of years. Rising trend thereafter till 2001-02. Million Tons Kg / Ha Society Society

  4. Dip due to drought in 02-03 and due to temperature variation in 04-05. Substantial increase from 06-07 onwards. RKVY, NFSM and manifold increase in budget allocation seem to have helped. Production and Productivity Trend Since 2001-02 Yield (Kg./ha) Production (000 MT)

  5. Required Growth Rates to meet the Demand Target growth rate of Wheat and Coarse Cereals are achievable as per current trends but growth rates of Pulses and Oilseeds have to be enhanced considerably. *Source R.S. Paroda and Praduman Kumar (2000), Food Production and Demand in South Asia **Dr. Ramesh Chand, Director NCAP in EPW, December 29,2007 Scenario changes if –(i) Incomes of bottom 30% of population go up (ii)TPDS demand goes up

  6. THE PULSES CHALLENGE • STRATEGIES: • Rice fallows (4 m ha) and summer moong • Intercropping • Diversion of upland rice area • Pigeon pea on rice bunds • Blue Bull control • Increased mechanisation ISSUES: 2020: Production : 18.08 mT , Demand : 23.8 mT Import (2020) 5.72 mT , Import (Current): 3-4 mT India : 659 kg / ha, Other countries 1700-2000 kg/ha

  7. SITUATION ON OILSEEDS FRONT Share of major States in production of Oilseeds • STRATEGY: • Utilize Kharif fallows for soybean particularly in MP, Karnataka, AP • Promote sunflower and toria as catch crops • Promote groundnut in Rabi • Control of pest and diseases • Expand area under oil palm • Develop improved varieties ISSUES: Current Production: 26.32 Million T. ; Projected Demand by 2011-12 : 53.00 Million T. Import of oil: 8.20 Million T. in 2008-09 Yield : India - 995 kg/ha;Global – 800 to 2200 kg/ha

  8. Yield Gap in Cereal Crops Actual Yield Reference: Agriculture Situation in India, August 2002 (Yield updated as in 2009)
