Engage in a dynamic multi-day project where students collaborate in teams to create a secret civilization. Teams will appoint a chief and outline their civilization's values, geography, history, and roles. Throughout the week, they'll explore and present cultural universals and artifacts that embody their unique societal values. With emphasis on creativity and teamwork, students will analyze artifacts and synthesize findings into presentations. Points will be awarded based on participation and work ethic, fostering a constructive learning environment.

DAY 1 • Class divided into four teams • Choose Team Chief • Each team develops a secret civilization • Values • Geographic location • Time • History and People
Specific Roles • Chief: • Team member evaluation form • At the end of each day award up to 3pts for the following criteria: present, prepared, work ethic, positive attitude
DAY 2 (Wed/Thurs) • Divide Cultural Universals. Write a draft description of the cultural Universals (25minutes) • Present your cultural universal(s) ideas to the whole team; other team members pay attention to inconsistencies or problems; Chief write down finalized universals. (25minutes) • Cultural Universal and Artifact description (25min) • Write out a description of your cultural universal. • 4-5 complete sentences –use back if necessary • Explain why it fits with your cultural values, geo, time • Due EOP • Homework: Completed Artifact
Artifacts • Must be handmade • Must be able to explain how it represents your universal. • Think outside the box–no limit for your creativity. Bonus points available. • If you are stuck: • Picture the actions that might take place between people when you think of your universal. • Imagine an object that might be used in these actions.
DAY 3 (Friday) • Teams switch artifacts (at least 4 of 8) • In pairs, investigate and analyze artifacts. • As a group, share analysis and conclusions secret civilization’s universals. (chief write down on handout)
DAY 4 (Tuesday) • Finish artifact analysis • Create Hypothesis presentations • Chief delegate tasks and synthesize ppt
