GRAPHICALLY SPEAKING

In this engaging project, students will read a work of literature and collaborate in groups to create a graphic novel that highlights the story's major themes, symbols, and plot development. Utilizing technology, they will design original cartoonized illustrations, write scripts, and use software such as Comic Life and befunky.com. Through storyboarding, creative costuming, and careful photography, students will craft a digital presentation of their graphic novels. This project encourages collaborative learning and brings literature to life in a visually artistic format.

  2. OVERVIEW • After reading a work of literature, students will divide into groups and create a graphic novel (comic book) with original “cartoonized” pictures that convey the major highlights of the work. These pictures with captions will result in a book or digital class presentation.

  3. OBJECTIVES • • Students will interpret literature for elements contributing to plot development, themes, and symbols. • • Students will create storyboards and scripts to represent classic and historical literature. • • Students will participate in technology-driven project-based learning.  • • Students will participate in collaborative groups. • • Students will utilize several types of photographic software programs and websites such as  www.befunky.com and Comic Life to create graphic novels. • • Students will share their presentations with peers to enhance the student-as-teacher experience .

  4. PLANNING • Divide into groups • Decide highlights of literary work • Use a storyboard to plan script and shots • Create costumes, props • Choose scene locations

  5. SHOOTING PICTURES • Use storyboard as a guide to getting all necessary pictures • Try several angles and composites • Pay attention to your background to avoid unwanted objects/people in your picture

  6. UPLOADING PICTURES • Attach digital camera into computer or card into card reader and insert flash drive • Drag photos onto flash drive and label each picture for identification

  7. CARTOONIZING PICTURES • Log on to www.befunky.com • Upload a picture • Click on “cartoonizer” and choose the top left effect. Apply • Save cartoon on flash drive

  8. CREATE GRAPHIC NOVEL • Open COMIC LIFE • Choose a template • Import cartoonized pictures • Add captions and dialogue

  9. MAKING DIGITAL PRESENTATION • Import jpg’s into Powerpoint • Choose or create background music to add to presentation • Use Insert music to bring music to 1st slide • Click on Transitions and set music to apply to all slides.
