  1. Solar Energy in the U.S. and U.K. Steve Rumfelt, Matt Zeglen, G.T. Salamone, Tim Hartney, Christie DeVantier and Elena Favata

  2. Current Investment in Solar Power • U.S.- President Obama invested an $1.85 billion in loan funding to two solar companies, Abound Solar Manufacturing, and Abengoa Solar, in July of 2010. Abengoa will be able to supply clean energy to 70,000 homes and remove around 475,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Abound Solar Manufacturing is set in Indiana and is planned to start running by 2012. This is a large improvement because in 2008 solar energy accounted for just 1% of the energy in the US • U.K.- The United Kingdom's inestment in solar energy dropped by 70% last year. This was the exact opposite of the popular trend as most countries started to invest more in solar energy.

  3. Newest Advancements • The U.S. and U.K. have the same advancements in solar energy • Thermovoltaic devices focus on harnessing the energy produced by the difference in temperatures between two differing materials. With efficiency getting better in this area, it’s becoming an excellent method of improving solar panel effectiveness. Normally, panels utilize the protons in the sun’s rays to move the negative electrons in the semiconductor panel. • Concentrated photovoltaics, or CPV, is one of the newest technologies being rolled out. Like the traditional solar panel technology, light is directed onto the panel to create usable energy. However, CPV focuses more light onto a smaller area, creating just as much, if not more, electricity.

  4. How and where is Solar Power generated to Electricity • The largest solar power instillation in the world is the Solar Energy Generating Systems located in the Mojave Desert in California, and is capable of producing 354 megawatts of electricity. The system collects energy by using a parabolic mirror to focus sun rays on a focal point. The heat is focused on a tube filled with synthetic oil that transfers heat to water and drives a turbine.Solar energy in the UK is most commonly used to heat water. It is harvested by painting thin pipes with black paint and setting them inside a greenhouse type insulator to heat the water. The UK is looking to install solar systems on the houses of 200,000 residents. They are also looking to incorporate 5 solar parks capable of collecting 5 megawatts each.
