  1. What does “genre” mean? • It is a French word meaning: a distinctive type or category of literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content ??? …… in other words A style of writing based on a theme

  2. Different fiction genres (themes) • Fantasy • Mystery • Historical • Realistic • Science fiction • Horror • Sports • Adventure

  3. FANTASY • contains elements that are not realistic • talking animals • magical powers • often set in a medieval universe • involving mythical beings

  4. Fantasy titles:

  5. MYSTERY • a work of fiction involving: • suspense • solving a puzzling event or situation • something unknown • solving a crime • centered around a person who investigates wrongdoing • centered around a person or persons employed to obtain secret information

  7. HISTORICAL FICTION • a novel set in a historical period (back in time) that uses invented characters or that uses real people but invents their conversations

  9. REALISTIC FICTION • stories that take place in modern times • characters are involved in events that could happen. Real kids doing real things!

  11. SCIENCE FICTION • stories that often tell about science and technology of the future • involving partially true laws or theories of science • Settings: • in the future • in space • on a different world • in a different universe or dimension

  13. HORROR STORIES • Scary or suspenseful setting • Sometimes involves the supernatural or magical events or mythical creatures • Gives you goosebumps or raises the hair on the back of your neck Not for bedtime reading!

  19. How to find a genre in the OPAC • Type the name of the genre: fantasy, mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, sports, adventure or horror stories in the text box and click on SUBJECT

  20. To find realistic fiction in the OPAC Try searching for subjects like: school stories, friendship, specific sports (baseball, soccer, etc), pets, brothers, sisters, divorce or family life.
