Meaning of the word “Creation” “To create” = found, beget, shape, make… Hebrew “bara” = mighty act of God Theologically, “creation”… It refers to the divine activity of originating, forming, and newly forming… It also refers to that which results from the divine activity: the totality of the created realities…

  2. “Creation narrative” It is an interpretation of the beginnings of one’s surroundings, …an explanation of its genesis, …a guessed description of the origin of the world

Genesis 2:4a-25 • Man [=adam] comes from the soil [=adamah] – humanity tied to the ground is fragile, limited… • “…fashioned of dust from the soil” – God as artisan fashioning human from clay, breathing into it the breath of life [=processual handiwork of God] • “He breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus man became a living being.” Man’s life depends totally on God; need of being in communion with God. • Man: center of God creative act; creation: first ring in the chain of God’s gratuitous blessings for man [=total gratuity] • “Not good for man to be alone” – man as a social being; in need of being in communion with his fellow humans

Genesis 1-11 • Begins with vision of fundamental harmony of creation: God’s creative act brings order out of chaos • Humanity is integrated into the world in many ways • Rooted in the earth, humanity is called to a God-given responsibility for the good of the whole • This is juxtaposed with the violent disruption of order; a near-return to chaos through inappropriate human interventions • Story of Noah – new creation placed under the cosmic sign of the rainbow as the sign of God’s everlasting covenant with creation.

Prophetic tradition • Major theme: the creative power of God manifests itself dramatically in the history of Israel. • God – who createdthem as a people… liberated them from Egypt… journeyedwith them to the Promised land – is the Creator God. He was with Israel in the tragedy of the Babylonian exile; through prophets, continued to promise liberation. • Prophetic vision uses language and symbolism of Mosaic experience to envision the future: there will be a new creation, the law will be written on the flesh of human hearts. • With the movement that is high monotheism of later Judaism: God is eventually seen as God of all creation, of all peoples.

  9. Sapiential writings: Wisdom of God as “creator” • 5th cent. BC, Wisdom literature advanced its theological reflection on creation; more cosmological attitude towards creation. Contemplating on creation, Sapiential writers led readers to believe in God. • Job 38-41 proclaims God’s sovereignty over all; • Prov 3:19f affirms God created the world with wisdom; Prov8:22-31 – speaks of personified Wisdom created by God before all… was present when all things were created.

Sirach 24:1-29 – Wisdom as dwelling in the midst of the people in the form of the Law. • Wisdom 7:21 – Wisdom as creator, master artisan of the universe; Wisdom 8:1-6 – Wisdom as maker of every being, as someone who governs in kindness. • Second part of the book of Wisdom (Wisdom 10-19) – presents human history as a synthesis of God’s salvific act: God who created the world with his Wisdom is the same God who intervened in history and redeemed his people Israel.

  11. Anthropological insights from the Hebrew Scriptures • The whole world owes its being entirely to the free, sovereign action of God. • God’s creative activity embraces the world from the beginning to the end of its history. • The world is basically good. • Humanity has a special role to play in this world of God’s creation.

  12. The world exists for the sake of humankind. • Biblical vision sees a dynamic vision of history as the interplay between divine freedom and human freedom. • The dark side of life is not due to God’s positive will. • Human beings find themselves at odds with one another and with the world around them in as far as they are at odds with God. • Salvation is, in essence, the completion of God’s creative work
