  6. #1: Guiding Questions • What is the stakeholder level of understanding of CCSS structure and content? •  What is the stakeholder level of understanding of key changes and shifts in teaching and learning as a result of CCSS? •  How do RtI, ELL, Special Ed and other initiatives connect to CCSS in your district?

  7. #1: Sample Processes • Communicate vision for the work • Name It • Graphic • Survey of stakeholder level of understanding • Administration • Teachers • Parents and community members • Tool for guiding review & gathering evidence • What are we already doing? • Structure for the Process • School Improvement Days • Faculty Meetings

  8. #1:Sample Tools • Common Core Website • Introductory Video • Common Core Treasure Hunt • Need to Know Guides • Parents’ Guide

  9. #1: Considerations • What new ideas are contained in CCSS? • How do you integrate CCSS transition work with district/school improvement strategies? • How do you ease staff anxiety as you transition? • What will be the timeline for the transition? • What will be the accountability checkpoints? • Where will you share information on CCSS with stakeholders?

  10. #1: Evidence • Measurement of stakeholder level of understanding of CCSS structure and content • Measurement of understanding of key changes and shifts in teaching and learning as a result of CCSS • Document or graphic showing how RtI, ELL, Special Ed and other initiatives connect to CCSS in the district

  13. #2 Develop a transition/alignment document for the district with input from all staff

  14. #2: Guiding Questions • How does CCSS connect to the current curriculum? • What will students need to know and be able to do in order to meet each standard? • Which CCSS will be priorities for your district? • What will teachers need to know and be able to do in order to move students to higher levels of thinking? • How will teaching change as a result of CCSS implementation?

  15. #2: Sample Processes

  16. #2:Sample Tools • Curriculum Analysis Tools (NCSM) • Four Calendar Options for ELA • CCSS Curriculum Design Document • Learning Progressions • Survey of Enacted Curriculum

  17. #2: Considerations • How will teachers coordinate their efforts across content areas? • What classroom changes and accommodations will be necessary? • What additional resources will be needed? • How will staff access the curriculum document?

  18. #2: Evidence • Transition/Alignment Curriculum Document • Higher cognitive demand • District priorities based on data • Identified classroom knowledge, reasoning, and skill targets defined by CCSS • Expected teacher practices, competencies, and skills

  21. Determine the aligned assessments for each standard #3

  22. #3: Guiding Questions • How will student progress be measured at all levels? • Common Formative • Interim/Benchmark • Summative • What formative and interim/benchmark assessments will need to be selected/designed in your district?

  23. #3: Sample Processes • For consistency, decide on the steps in your district’s common assessment design process: Teach the steps • Select a Common Core Strand • Use the Instructional Alignment Chart to explore the progression across grades • Reflect on current assessments to see what is available or what needs to be created • Unwrap standards into targets in grade level or content level groups • Determine the district process for reflecting and refining assessments

  24. #3:Sample Tools • Common Core Standards Review your current data, select an area that is weak, and create a plan to improve • Understanding By Design Template • PARCC Content Frameworks Break down into grade level groups to look for key areas to assess • Instructional Alignment Chart Use to study the transition between grades • Mathematics Assessment Project

  25. #3: Considerations • What is the process for selecting and designing common assessments? • How will you relieve staff anxiety? • How will your staff access the Assessment Map? • What additional resources will be needed? • What professional development is needed for teacher and administrator assessment literacy? • How will your parents and community learn about the Assessment Map?

  26. #3: Evidence • Assessment Map aligned to your curriculum • Common Formative • Interim/Benchmark • Summative • Template Checklist • Review of Common Assessment results data

  38. Ways to Ensure Lack of Success… 5.  Assume giving teachers a copy of CCSS is enough 4.  Don’t carve out time for teachers to meet and discuss how to implement CCSS 3.  Don’t hold administrators accountable for monitoring implementation of CCSS 2.  Don’t let stakeholders (board, parents, community) know what’s going on with CCSS…

  39. Keep your head in the sand hoping it will all go away!
