  1. Analysis of UFO Energy Distribution in 2011 and 2012 Francesca Day

  2. Looked at candidate UFOs detected at quadrupole BLMs in arc cell > 12, while the beam was at maximum energy • Data from April – June 2012 and May, June and September 2011 • 2879 candidate UFO events in 2012 and 3419 in 2011 • Integrated Dose: Maximum absorbed dose per unit time in period of 10.24 ms • Peak Loss: Maximum absorbed dose per unit time in period of 40 μs

  3. We expect the beam loss energy to be approximately proportional to the size of the dust particle responsible for the UFO • Magnet test hall measurements: dust particle abundance approximately inversely proportional to dust particle volume • Therefore expect UFO occurrence to be (very) approximately proportional to energy Reference: T. Baer et al., “UFOs: Observations, Studies and Extrapolations” LHC Beam Operation Workshop, Dec. 2011

  4. This Week: Effect of beam emittance on UFO rate and size.
