  3. Process Objectives

  4. Solvent Extraction Raffinate Solution Raffinate Recovery NMP Treater Tower Solvent & Stripping Gas Recovery Feed Extract Recovery Extract Solution

  5. Extraction concepts • Using solvent, you extract either desirable or undesirable compounds from a liquid mixture. • Counter-current liquid/liquid contacting in Treater Tower • Two phase system - heavy & light phase • Improves viscosity index, color of lube oil • Removes aromatic compounds • Reduce viscosity

  6. Properties of NMP • Full name : N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone • Density, 25 C : 1.027 • Boiling Point, C : 204 • Freezing Point, C: -24.1 • Viscosity, cP @140 C: 1.02 H2C CH2 H2C C=O NCH3

  7. Extract Recovery • Extract solution (treater tower bottom - aromatic distillate) preheated to 225 C before entering the Extract Recovery Furnace • Extract Recovery Tower: • 27 trays; top temperature : 260 - 265 C, Bot temperature : 250 - 275 C (top & bot depend on type of grade) • Stripping medium : LPG at 210 C • Extract oil stripped down to 5 ppm of NMP • Overhead product : stripping gas, water vapor, light HC and NMP Vap • Overhead product is combined with raffinate recovery tower overhead. • They go to dry solvent drum through series of exchanger which generate intermediate steam and increase Extract Recovery Furnace • Bottom product is stripped off of light HC and cooled to 80 C and then goes to tankage.

  8. Raffinate Recovery • Raffinate solution (treater tower overhead - paraffinic distillate) preheated to 210 C before entering the Raffinate Recovery Furnace. Raffinate Recovery : • 27 trays; top temperature : 225-235 C, Bot temperature : 290 - 310 C (top & bot depend on type of grade) • Stripping medium : LPG at 210 C • Raffinate oil stripped down to 5 ppm of NMP • Overhead product : stripping gas ,water vapor ,light HC and NMP Vap • Overhead product is combined with extract recovery tower overhead. • They go to dry solvent drum through series of exchanger which generate intermediate steam and increase Extract Recovery Furnace • Bottom product goes to Hydrofiner reactor
