Energy from the sun is absorbed by the chlorophyll molecules in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast Water is also absorbed by the roots and enters the thylakoid membranes During the light independent reaction, carbon dioxide, ATP, and NADPH are used to make high energy sugars such as glucose After a series of light dependent reactions, oxygen is produced and released into the atmosphere and ATP and NADPH move to the stroma to be used during the Calvin cycle Once ATP and NADPH are used they become ADP and NADP+and move back to the thylakoid to be reenergized 6 H2O + 6 CO2 6 O2 + C6H12O6 The Calvin cycle is also called the light independent reaction because it does not require light Plant cell chloroplast stroma thylakoid
