According to the pandit for rituals in Varanasi, there is an old story behind the asthi visarjan in Varanasi. Once there was a Brahmin living with his wife far way from Varanasi and never followed any hindu rituals, which are essential for a Hindu Brahmin. One day he went to a forest but killed by a tiger. The tiger had eaten the flesh of the Brahmin but some flesh remained in the forest. After some time the flesh had taken by a vulture. In this meantime, Yamraj took his soul to the Yam lok and decided to punish him for not following any rules of a Brahmin. At that time, the vulture was flying over Ganga with that piece of flesh in his mouth and accidentally some parts of the flesh fall in the river Ganga. When the execution of that Brahmin was going on, angels from heaven come to the Yam Raj and informed that they have to take the soul of the Brahmin to the heaven as his mortal (asthi) has been immersed in the river Ganga and now he has attained Moksh. It had happened because of asthi visarjan in the purest river Ganga at Varanasi. Now all the sins of the Brahmin faded away and his departed soul attained peace as well as salvation.
