Conferences Subcommittee • ABP TCs will support SciTech and P&E Forum • There are concerns about compressed abstract review timeline: action to track abstract and paper metrics • All TCs should provide 2015 TAO names to Dave McGrath this week • Idea raised to offer poster presentations to authors of rejected abstracts Propulsion & Energy ASM / SciTech P&E 2014 abstract reviews due Feb 7

ABP Honors and Awards • Air Breathing Propulsion Award • 3 nominations in hand for 2014 – no new nominations so far (minimum is 3) – Deadline for 2014 is Feb 1. • Need help identifying nominees for 2015 (new deadline Feb 1) • Must have at least three new nominations for 2015 to sustain award • Best paper awards • Evaluation process starts after ASM • Each TC overseas their own best paper award • Volunteer reviewers welcome – contact TC H&A lead • Session chairs email bet paper choices to your H&A chair

GC Oates Student Award Status • Agreement Has Been Signed by ABP TCs and AIAA Foundation • New Award Funding Distribution • $1000 Cash Award • $150 Plaque • No Travel Expenses • Award To be Re-instated for 2015 P&E • Looking for Volunteer for GC Oates Head Judge • AIAA Foundation Agreement • AIAA Foundation restored the Endowment to $25,000 • TCs Agree to Work with AIAA to Identify Fundraising Opportunities to Support the Endowment • Fund is Intended to Last in Perpetuity – Award Will Be Suspended if Fund Balance Goes Below $20,000 Threshold • Endowment Fund Assets Will Be Managed by AIAA Foundation • TCs Have Requested Quarterly Reporting on Fund Status • TC’s have requested, but not yet received overview of portfolio investment strategies and outlook for the coming year • Fund Balance is $29k as of 30 Sept 2013

ABP Education • Accomplishments/Status • New ABP Education Subcommittee Chair – Dan Jensen • All ABP TCs Participated in Undergraduate Design Competition Evaluation • Short Courses • HSABP Short Course Planned for P&E 2014 • “Practical Introduction to Air Breathing Propulsion” for P&E 2014 • Second Propulsion Aerodynamics Workshop at P&E 2014 (July 31st – August 1st in Cleveland) • Significant discussion on how best to engage high school students for STEM outreach • New Initiatives and Plans • Offer More Webinars – Seeking Volunteers • Support Undergraduate Design Competition • Possibility to expand PAW to more fully cover all three ABP TCs • Develop new courses – HSABP collaborating with Pressure Gain Combustion Working Group

Engine Design Competition Accomplishments Issues / Help Needed • This year, the second round of judging will take place at the AIAA Propulsion & Energy Forum in Cleveland, OH in July • The special session will be chaired by Ian Halliwell • Volunteers are sought for judging panel • Suggestions for “low-speed” topics for the next RFP are invited! Topic: Candidate Engines for a Supersonic Business Jet • 12 letters of intent have been received from: • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (3) • Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India • InstitutTeknologi, Bandung, Indonesia (2) • University of Economics & Technology, Ankara, Turkey • University of Istanbul, Turkey (2) • University of Kansas (2) • Western Michigan University • The response is 4 higher than last year Updated 14 January 2014

Impacts to AIAA • Ended 2012(471K) and 2013(2.2M) with a negative operating balance • Budgeted 2013 anticipating negative operating balance (500K) • Major Factors (see following charts): • overall 25% decrease (average) in conference attendance in 2013 • Cancellation/delay of vended events • Mandated a balanced budget for 2014 • Used new reporting structure • Constructed Forum budgets as “projects” incorporating all relevant Institute activities • Overall budget cuts of $1.1M had to be identified

Propulsion Aerodynamics Workshop (PAW) • Sponsored by the AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Systems Integration Technical Committee • Goal: • Mobilize industry to focus research and analysis efforts on air breathing propulsion areas and to assess the numerical prediction capability of CFD technology/tools for propulsion related flows • Objectives: Organize/mobilize the industry in Air Breathing Propulsion CFD focuses • Facilitate an impartial forum for participants to showcase their work • Perform data control and to compiled/summarize the results • Referee and judge the work and presentation by participants • Test Cases • for the P&E2014 • 2nd PAW workshop ONERA Serpentine Diffuser GTTC Dual Flow Reference Nozzle 21 member organizing committee consist of 21 members from 14 Organizations. The workshop offer Scholarship to qualified students, educators and retirees. Financial contributions & services to the workshop are welcome.
