  4. WHARTON-WESLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SACREDPLACESCIVICSPACES.COM #SACREDMEETSCIVIC BUILDING BLOCKS 01 02 5341 CATHARINE ST | COBBS CREEK Wharton-Wesley United Methodist Church, located in Cobbs Creek, is embedded in the surrounding residential fabric. While it once had a congregation of 700, today, most of its 150 members are from outside the neighborhood. High utility costs and aging infrastructure make the church and Sunday school building costly and challenging to maintain. Chris Kendig Photography

  5. ZION BAPTIST CHURCH 02 3600/3601 N BROAD ST | NICETOWN-TIOGA Zion Baptist Church, in the Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood, has a rich history, including the legacy of Reverend Leon Sullivan who served as pastor for 37 years. The congregation has two buildings located directly across Broad Street from each other – a 1970s contemporary building which it currently uses and the 1920s “annex” which used to house the church’s outreach programs but is now vacant. 6. THE PHILADELPHIA MASJID 03 4700 WYALUSING AVE | MILL CREEK The Philadelphia Masjid serves a congregation of 500 and also acts as a central hub for many others in the Muslim community. The 1.5-acre site was built in 1922 as a Roman Catholic school and much of the complex has been underutilized since the closing of the Sister Clara Muhammad School over ten years ago. The unique aspect of this site is that it offers the potential for both renovation and new construction – renovation of the building and new construction on the vast open space behind the building.
